Pedestrian killed in Cathedral City hit-and-run

KATE MCGINTY AND BRIAN INDRELUNAS • THE DESERT SUN • JANUARY 14, 2011

It was the former drummer for rock band Iggy Pop who was killed by a hit-and-run driver late Thursday in Cathedral City.

Police identified him as Alexander Kirst, 47, of Cathedral City.

Someone spotted Kirst lying along the side of Date Palm Drive just north of the entrance to Date Palm Country Club about 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

The unidentified witness called police, thinking the man was intoxicated. Police said he had actually been hit by a car in the northbound lanes.

“We have no evidence of any braking,” Sgt. Paul Herrera said. “(The driver) made no attempt to stop and fled the scene.”

Kirst toured the world as drummer for rock singer Iggy Pop and the alternative rock band The Nymphs. He also co-composed all songs on “Beat ‘Em Up,” a 2001 Iggy Pop album.

“I’m devastated. Just devastated,” his brother Whitey Kirst, a guitarist for Iggy Pop, said this evening while watching YouTube videos of their performances.

“From what I understand he just went to the store to get a pack of cigarettes.”

Police issued a plea for public help Friday in identifying the driver or the vehicle. The vehicle would have front-end damage and missing headlights.

Kirst was the sixth pedestrian killed along valley roadways since Thanksgiving. One bicyclist was also hit and killed.

Kirst — a Canadian native who moved to the U.S. in his teens and lived in Cathedral City the last few years — was one of five brothers, three of whom have worked as musicians.

“He’s dynamite. He’s great, I loved playing with my brother, and since I was a kid, I always wanted to do and I got to do that,” Whitey Kirst said.

He also had two children, a son who will celebrate his 18th birthday next week and a teenage daughter. Neither lived with him.

“He’s a great guy. I’m going to miss him greatly."

Police asked anyone with information in the case — and anyone who was driving near Date Palm and Gerald Ford drives between 11:30 p.m. and midnight — to call
Traffic Investigator Marc Robles at (760) 202-2416.
