I saw this stuff, about a week ago, that was RIDICULOUS! I went to my friend's girl friend's house, and her dad grows, so he hooked her up with this shit that had MORE HAIRS than green. Like, seriously, I've smoked a lot of pot in my life, and it seemed like you could give this thing a HAIRCUT. Anyway, they ripped it and got ridiculously high, but I didn't :p . Just thought it would be nice to share. :o
 
yea just because the bud is hairy doesnt mean it more fire. it might look like it but hairs dont get you high. trichomes do. i used to love getting hairy ass buds wen i was younger :)
 
Yeah I don't care about red hairs at all, but there are some really nice stains that can be characterised by their bright red hairs... It's the tris that do you in, not the hairs.
 
well seeing as each of those hairs goes directly to a trichome, bud with alot of hairs should have alot of trichomes, logically thinking.... i know that this is not always the case.
 
^Incorrect. Hairs grow from calyxes, these are defining sex organs of a female specimen. Trichomes start off their beautiful lives looking like tiny white hairs, this is thc secreted by the glands in the plant. These tiny hairs upon closer inspection develop a "mushroom head" on them that kinda swells over time. These little mushrooms will be clear/translucent until the plant is starting to reach maturity. In most cases if the plant is harvested while the majority of these trichomes are "clear", it will result in a headier high. If you wait till most of them are cloudy/opaque it will produce a more "down high". ANYWAY, the hairs themselves, while beautiful, do nothing to indicate potency other than the fact that they help determine(with other factors) peak ripeness for harvest.

ok so the calyxs are coated with trichomes and these hairs point to a calyx ; so a lot of hairs would mean many calyxs, meaning many spaces for thc production. not necessarily true , but maybe why people associate hairy buds with being good. that's what i meant
 
^that makes sense.

when i was younger i remember getting weed that was maybe 50-60 percent hairs. very strange looking. i remember it because it was orange but it wasnt anything special high wise.

on a side note, usually a lot of calyxes is a good thing. However, when you break up good bud, you will see something that looks like a calyx but is actually a THC gland. They will be sorta round balls that look like the base of a calyx, the moer of these you see, the better. I had a strain called Swazi Safari, and a couple of the phenotypes seemed to be pure glands when you broke up the bud. Other strains that I have had that exibited the same traits are: one pheno of Western Winds, Purple Power, Island Sweet Skunk, OG Kush, Purple Thrax(purple antrax), Northern Lights(all variations but especially #2) and a few others but those are the most promenant off the top of my head.

You should never be harvesting when trichomes are mostly still clear. The most THC is present when they are all cloudy, for indicas i like barely any amber, however with sativas i like 15-20% amber, then the rest cloudy with very few clears.

imo hairs are absolutely useless when determinning ripeness... i guess if u didnt have a pair of binoculars around or 10 bucks for the 60x scope from radiosshack. Regardless hairs are almost always brown/red/orange before the plant is ready.

also flowering time (genetics) play a way bigger role on effect of high than the trich's themselves...
