do you find that the drug effects in that film were realistic? i find the part where he hallucinates on weed is fake and the effect on marijuana also. what do you think?
 
RFAD did not age well for me at all. It's overwrought, sensationalist, and not shot as well as Aronofsky's other work. The fact that their pupils dilate rather than contract when they shoot up is a factual error I find hard to overlook. The mother's subplot is the most interesting part of the film. If you want some good movies about being a junky, watch Candy, Pure and Rush.

I still need to read RFAD, the novel, though. Anyone have anything to say about it?
 
+1 on the pupils dilating when they shoot up, for me that was the most annoying part of the film. I rated RFAD highly, but it is several years since I watched it and I do think Jennifer Connelly is stunning.
 
I found the fact that the idiot didn't find another vein to shoot in was retarded, but other than that it was filmed beautifully. The book is much better, and I think a lot of people on this site would appreciate it more than the movie

the book is awesome , i sat down read it all day, woke up and finished it in a few hours

hubert selby jr's writing style is awesome, he spells words how they would be spoken and doesn't even bother using quotation marks

here's an example, from his first book, 'last exit to brooklyn'

She didnt need any goddamn skell to buy her a drink. She could get anything she wanted in Willies. She had her kicks. Shed go back to Willies where what she said goes. That was the joint. There was always somebody in there with money. No bums like these cruds. Did they think shed let any goddamn bum in her pants and play with her tits for a few bucks. Shit! She could get a seamans whole payoff just sittin in Willies.

We watched this movie the other night... couldn't resist man, we went right out and copped a bundle. lol
 
He wrote another great book called Last Exit to Brooklyn, which is also really great. Transvestites popping bennies, shooting morphine etc. it's great to read if you have Lou Reed's Transformer album playing in the background, just completes the heroin chic atmosphere
 
I'd say they did a halfway decent job of showing amphetamine addiction and psychosis.

I agree that the whole pupils dilating when doing heroin thing was really hard to overlook.

Good movie, but there are tons of better drug movies that do a better job of showing the effects of drugs. Spun, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Trainspotting, Easy Rider (although they were actually on the drugs in question in that film so I don't know if you could count it)...to name a few.
 
I thought Basketball Diaries was really good. It hurt to watch that film, and their representation of the heroin obsession is great.

There's this one seen where Leonardo dicaprio is in some dump shooting dope with this sleazy guy who's talking about a dream he had where he's got this huge spoon filled with heroin and something like the virgin Mary is cooking it with a large candle. Im not sure if it was the virgin Mary or an angel but it was something along those lines. It just totally captured the kinds of things I would talk about while being high on heroin. Heroin.

Yeah It hink that was pretty unrealistic. I like the basketball dairies too,. They both of their flaws.. but I liked how he went through withdrawals in the basketball diaries..and how they get that fake dime bag and it ends up getting smoeone killed all over 10 bucks.. casue thast hwo it is in reali life
 
I enjoyed the flick.

However, do NOT think it's a good idea to watch while tripping. Wouldn't be the first time I've let someone learn that the hard way... (and also had to endure it myself in the meantime..)

I hallucinated off smoking Jamaican weed back in 1990..........it was some really good weed & I smoked an entire joint within 5 minutes which is hard to do for me. I would inhale & not exhale for a while. Talk about seeing things, wow!

As for the movie, it was pretty good.....Jennifer Connelly is a beautiful woman & she played her part great. As for other drug movies that I found better.........Drugstore Cowboy is my favorite & I dont even use needles.............Basketball Diaries was awesome...........Trainspotting was great...........
