"CBD is a powerful inhibitor of cytochrome P450 isozymes 3A4, 2C19, and 2D6" (Bornheim et al. 1994; Bornheim and Grillo 1998)

Some cannabis-drug interactions are apparent, but are few in number. Additive sedative effects with other agents, including alcohol, may be observed. Similarly however, additive or synergistic anti-emetic and analgesic benefits may accrue when combining dopamine agonist neuroleptics and cannabis ( Carta, Gessa, and Nava 1999 ). Cannabis may accelerate metabolism of theophylline, while slowing that of barbiturates. Anticholinergic-induced tachycardia may be accentuated by cannabis, while this effect is countered by beta-blockers ( Grotenhermen 2002 ). Indomethacin seems to reduce slightly the psychoactive and tachycardic effects of cannabis ( Perez-Reyes et al. 1991 ). As discussed above, synergistic analgesic benefits may accrue with concomitant usage of cannabis and opioids ( Cichewicz et al. 1999; Hare 1887 ). CBD is a powerful inhibitor of cytochrome P450 isozymes 3A4, 2C19, and 2D6 ( Bornheim et al. 1994; Bornheim and Grillo 1998 ) indicating the need for caution in cannabis patients taking that component in conjunction with fentanyl, sildenafil ( Viagra® ), tricyclic antidepressants and anti-arrhythmic drugs.

Meaning CBD inhibits CYP2D6, an enzyme that metabolizes lots of drugs (including: MDMA, DXM, Codeine, etc.). Thus, the reason they are potentiated. Just thought I'd share, never seen it mentioned before..

interesting.. i always assumed it was only this part: "additive or synergistic anti-emetic and analgesic benefits may accrue when combining dopamine agonist neuroleptics and cannabis " but it's interesting to note about the enzymes

actually if it is an inhibitor of 2d6 it should REDUCE the effectiveness of codeine because codeine is converted into morphine by the cyp2d6 enzyme. but since it also inhibits 3a4 which is the other pathway that codeine is broken down i guess it just means that more codeine stays in the blood stream longer. maybe thats why the ol' grapefruit juice trick works so well for me with codeine cause i smoke so much dank too hehe

see this link for more info on Cytochrome P450 enzymes and their interactions.

so its it better to smoke before or at the same time as when u take other drugs?

^ yeah i'd like to know as well... but to be sure until this is answered, just toke a little before, during, and after

Doesn't really matter, it has effect when you do it before, during and after. But ofcourse within a limited amount of time, as long as CBD is active (basically as long as THC is; 4 hours).

Though I suspect that most of the potentiating effects of cannabis aren't due to that, cause you get a boost in the strength of your benzos, trips or whatever, preety quickly.

But most people do find it boosts the strenght of benzo's and other hallucinogenic drugs, don't they?

Though I agree, this surely isn't the main reason why weed synergizes/potentiates so nicely with nearly everything. I've just never seen it mentioned before..

Yeah, definatly, interesting. Infact, as far as I'm awear, we still don't know what CYP is responsible for D9-THC metabolism.

But it still is a matter of A+B > A by itself.

I mean, do those of you with huge tolerances to pot find a noticable affect when smoking a tiny bit with other drugs?

hmmm.... thats a really elegant experiment, unfortunately, I don't think you could get useful information from gathering data in a pop-vox style

well I've certainly noticed it potentiates MDMA a hell of a lot, almost to the point of bringing my roll back hours afterwards, perhaps this can validate it scientifically

I think it potentiates pretty any drug you combine it with (although speed, coke etc is a matter of preference-like all) in my experience.

You sure don't find a lot of research about cannabis interactions...interesting

I've had this happen many times, if I smoke when an E is starting to wane, the weed will bring the roll right back up again. Unfortunately it also tends to make me less sociable and comfortable talking to people, which is one of the reasons I love E.
