I have been considering taking anti depressants but reading the general mindset of the ppl who take them i wouldnt want to end up like that.

It seems like most of the users just have really passive lives probably do nothing and seem to expect the world from these pills then just whine when they dont perform miracles.

I think the the United states is probably alot worse with this mentality than the uk but we seem to be going in the same direction.

It really is sad to read how ppl think on those forums. The people just sound like lost souls. I know depression can suck the life out of you but they seem to have bought into the whole learned helplessness thing where they are the passive and useless patient just waiting for outside forces to solve all their problems.

Like I say I dont want to get sucked into that mentality, hence my reluctance to become another one on the list of the damned shuffling up to my doctor praying he will save me.

It seems more appealing to take my chances with self medication.

There are certainly some people out there who are probably exhibiting learned helplessness, yes...but it's not accurate to say that's everybody. I've been on SSRIs for years, if anything I was more passive before medication - now I don't really give a fuck about what other people say\think of me, so I say exactly what's on my mind all the time.

Cool, good to hear about the other side of the coin. I suppose maybe those type of forums would attract more the non acting type cos those who were active would be out doing other things :)

Similar to how junkies are the most visible form of drug users.

Yes. I will say not all SSRIs are created equal - the two I would really only recommend are Escitalopram or Sertraline - Most people will have a very good reaction to at least one of those two.

If not, then perhaps Fluvoxamine - especially if Sertraline in particular gave you a bad reaction.

If you try all three of those and still no luck, do not try another SSRI, those are the best.

I've been on SSRI's before, years ago, and I'm now vehemently opposed to them. I'm still depressed most of each year, but I'm not fucked up by the meds at least. For Christ's sake, most of Prozacs effects are reported to be from placebo, and they don't even know how it actually helps people pharmacology wise.

i dont really understand the argument where people say they dont understand it and how serotonin is not proven to increase mood.

wtf does mdma do then!!!? :P

Remember that when people come onto a forum to talk about something, it's usually not because they like that something, or it works for them.

Consider this very sub-forum - nobody posts to say ''hey guys, I just obtained some morphine pills, successfully crushed them and extracted the main ingredient at the correct dose, predosed with a decent antihistamine, prepared my shot with a wheel filter, used a new vein, landed it on the first time and got really really high.'' Firstly because it would contribute nothing to the forum, and secondly because in that situation the person would be out enjoying their high, not wasting it on bluelight (much as I love this place).

It's the same for everyone. Go to a forum about a book, and you'll find everyone who overanalyzes it to the point that they don't actually enjoy it, go to a forum about games, and you'll find people who hate the game, because if they didn't, they'd be off playing it instead.

Of course, this isn't universally true, but as a rule, negative emotions or other problems tend to send people to the internet faster than positive ones.

Anyway, as far as SSRI's go, I'm pretty opposed to them generally speaking, but I used to be deadset against them until I was talked into at least trying it recently. I mean hell, with all the other drugs I've done, what's one more (and I have to admit that the drug geek part of me is curious about what it does, even if it isn't ''recreational'')? Can always stop taking it if it doesn't work after 2 months or whatever the time period is.

wtf does mdma do then!!!? :P

stimulation from increased DA/NE levels plus oxytocin release from 5HT1A agonism? i don't think serotonin increases mood directly tbh

i've been on SSRIs (Fluoxetine and Escitalopram) and they never did anything for me other than sexual dysfunction and not being able to roll. depression is a very complicated thing imo

some people sure get some results from them but well... we all have different brains

and btw why the hell are you 'considering doing SSRIs'? if you're having trouble with depression i'd just suggest you do some CBT/DBT, read some books about depression, self-help whatever, try to learn the most about it... to me that's what helped... getting out of those negative beliefs/thought patterns whatever

peace

SSRIs made me feel like a zombie, as if I'm aware of everything, but I'm not actually there. Also, it made suicide seem alright because you feel so disconnected not much concerns you. Personally, I'm biased against anti-depressants.

and on the opposite side of the coin, Paxil and Abilify have worked absolute wonders for me depression wise. Yes there are some side effects, but they very greatly from person to person. I do have some sexual dysfunction but its nothing my little blue pills dont rectify perfectly.....to each their own.

i think theyr a big mistake, i think it all comes down to accepting our thoughts/emotions and letting them pass through

depression is a chance for us to look inward at what habits are self-destructive or w/e

Everyone in the depressed category aren't all depressed for the same reasons, so being a guinea pig to antidepressants is like throwing darts on a map, you're just hoping to get close to state of the problem which we all know is very hard.

IMO, stay far away from SSRI's, they do more harm than good. You get more out of talking through your depressed feelings.........self medicating is tough but if you have self control, it can be done.

Anti-depressants work for some and don't for others. I recommend mirtazepine (Remeron). Its a good AD with no sexual side-effects. Worked for 6 months or so and then didn't work at all for me. But hey it did better than atleast 20 other anti depressants.

WA.........that's another problem with these type of meds, they stop working & you're back to square one & not only that, you stated you tried 20 others so called antidepressants?

That's insane bro.........I'm guessing you had to be on each one for about 2 months before figuring out they don't work? That's like 2 years of trials & in the mean time you're still depressed or getting worse & these antidepressants do in a lot of cases make you worse.

I won't deny that there are some people/cases out here that need a lot of help with therapy, whether it was a very bad childhood or something very traumatic in their lives had happened.

I know a guy that is bi-polar, has depression & probably some other things wrong & he will tell anyone who will listen hislife story.......guy had a bad childhood. Guys in & has been for years on antidepressants & bi-polar meds & still flips out at the smallest things.

I rather not say anything more about him but my point is, I do think he needs meds like Seroquel & others to stabilize him & able to keep a steady job for years, but they don't help him interact with people in general because he's always paranoid thinking no one likes him & thinks all women hate him, etc.......

Bottom line, its a tough situation for him but IMO ......most people out here do not need anti-depressants. Its a huge scam to over medicate the public & falsefy diagnosis & make the pharm companies big money. Just look at all the BS ADD/ADHD cases of children in the past 20 years, its sickening & they know they are wrongfully diagnosing a lot of these kids.
