Hey,

So my girlfriend and I have been on again off again addicts for about 2.5 years now. We're both smokers and have been recently using around .3-.5 a day. In the past we have used Subs to get through the WDs and then would stay clean for months at a time. The WDs are simply unbearable without the help of a Sub. Unfortunately all the Subs Ive gotten in the past have been found on the street but now I cannot find any. Im thinking about going to a doctor to try and get a prescription since my research indicates that it is fairly easy to find a MD willing to help. In the past my girlfriend and I have split a single 8mg/2mg strip and rapid detox from it. We start with 2mg the first day, 1 mg the second day, .5 the third, .25 the fourth and after that we're pretty much set. Any further discomforts we have found to be manageable. So I am wondering if I should share this information with the doctor because 1) I dont want to pay for more than I need 2) I dont want to be on it for longer than I have to. Will the doctor be less likely to prescribe me something if they know I have used it in the past? Also will they take my previous experiences with it into consideration or will they want to put me on a program? As the actual appointment is often the most expensive part I dont want to pay an arm and a leg only to be prescribed nothing. Thank you guys for the insight..

Well, IME, suboxone doctors would not penalize someone for using buprenorphine in the past even if its obtained illegally. As long as the purpose of using it was for detox, then they most likely wouldn't feel weary about the situation. Also, you should know that it really is more expensive from what I remember (if your paying out of pocket, and don't have insurance to cover it) to be prescribed the 2mg tablets/strips, rather than the 8mg ones (unfortunately, they only come in two doses, luckily the strips are easier to divide.)

If you go in there and explain that you only intend to use the suboxone for a rapid detox, I really don't think you will be walking out of the office with a prescription. I'm not telling you to lie, but if you say that, they will most likely try to refer you to some outpatient detox I would imagine.

Yeah, you really shouldn't be penalized in any way for telling the doctor you've used Suboxone illicitly in the past and what your results were. But I agree with znegative, that if you only want to do a short-term detox over 4-5 days, there's no guarantee that (regardless of what you tell them) they won't try to convince you to stay on it longer or refer you to detox, it really depends on the doctor. You might end up being prescribed more pills/strips than you want. There's no way to know whether or not your doctor will be one of those ones who think everyone should be given long-term maintenance.

I was in same boat as you, I'd always bought subs on the street, and been able to use one 8mg pill to do a 4-7 day "rapid detox". The time I needed a sub the most, I was at my parents home on an extended weekend vacation, and had to be at work the following day, at my home 6 hours away. I frantically searched, finally tracked down a guy that would sell me two tablets, got in my car, drove the 6 hours home, and when I unpacked everything, they were lost...I searched my car inside and out, all my bags, everything, and they were just GONE. I freaked out...cried, hammered my fists into the wall...the next morning I called a bunch of sub doctors, finally found one close, and scheduled a next day appt. ( I was taking loperamide in the meantime to hold me over...) I told him I had used subs illegally, always for detox purposes, and was ready to do it the right way, and he was understanding, and prescribed me WAY more than I knew was right ( he had me on 8mg in the AM, 8mg at bed time...crazy talk). SO I filled my prescription for like 60 pills, and only used a couple. Now, I have a nice little safety net for when I need them, which at this current point in time, I do, and I'm SO happy I did all that. It feels WONDERFUL to have a large amount of subs for a rainy day....rather than just having dope, being so afraid of when your dealer stops selling, gets caught, etc.
