One of my favourite Slayer songs

RIP Jeff dude, sucks I've never seen them live.

r.i.p. Jeff, "Hell Awaits" will always be the best Slayer album (and the Haunting the Chapel EP)... "Reign In Blood" is just lots of filler, good but way overrated... They lost me after "Seasons in the Abyss", everything after that has been awful

R.I.P I remember when I first heard Slayer as a school kid and thinking this is fucking brilliant, true metalheads.

Apparently the Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket his funeral...which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I thought "God Hates Us All" was kinda their central message.

In any case, I don't see them faring well against a horde of Slayer fans.

Slayer has and always will be my favorite band.
I saw them in 2004, after Dave Lombardo had returned.
Was right in front with the pit not far behind me. They did Reign In Blood from front to back. It was bliss, and still the best concert going experience of my life.

RIB isn't my favorite album. I was always partial to South of Heaven.
I would pretty strongly disagree with the poster that said everything after Season's in the Abyss has sucked. The Paul Bostaph records were OK, but once Lombardo got back behind the set, everything clicked again, IMO. Albums during his return(he's left again, hopefully temporarily) have been stellar. Especially Christ Illusion.

Anyhow, Slayer has felt to me like the band that would always be there. This is close to as jarring as Dime's death. Obviously Hanneman had been sick for a good while, but still. Fucking sucks.
RIP Jeff Hanneman.

i was never into slayer. it just reminds me of the scene in gummo. so when this guy died, i pasted a photo of that and posted the actor who carved it into his arm, tagged em on fb b/c we're fast friends. RIP though i guess, slayer man. people adored you.

he was one of the greatest talents to ever grace this earth fucking gutted
i was drooling at the mouth for the next album now im lost as to what we will get will it be the last slayer album ?

^I know Tom Araya had said they wouldn't write and record a new album until Hanneman had recovered.
It's really depressing to think that we may have gotten our last album.

However, I don't believe that KK will allow that and I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.
The current lineup is not Slayer. Jon Dette and Gary Holt? No.
Definitely mixed feelings regarding any future albums. I figured the original four would still be cranking out albums 20 years from now. Sucks. Just sucks.

SLAYER’S JEFF HANNEMAN DIED OF ALCOHOL-RELATED CIRRHOSIS; BAND + FAMILY PLANNING MEMORIAL EVENT

Following last week’s tragic passing of Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman on May 2, his official cause of death has been revealed to be alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver, according to a statement from the band. In the same press release, Slayer also announced that a public memorial will be held to honor Hanneman at a yet-to-be-revealed date.

While it has been known that Hanneman was battling the disease necrotizing fasciitis, which he likely contracted from a 2011 spider bite, the band has revealed that the guitarist’s struggles with alcohol addiction is what ultimately led to his passing.

The post on Slayer’s official website reads as follows:

We’ve just learned that the official cause of Jeff’s death was alcohol related cirrhosis. While he had his health struggles over the years, including the recent Necrotizing fasciitis infection that devastated his well-being, Jeff and those close to him were not aware of the true extent of his liver condition until the last days of his life. Contrary to some reports, Jeff was not on a transplant list at the time of his passing, or at any time prior to that. In fact, by all accounts, it appeared that he had been improving – he was excited and looking forward to working on a new record.

As mentioned, the band also announced that a public memorial will be held to honor Hanneman, who was a legendary figure in the heavy metal world. Here is the description of the upcoming event:

While the details are being worked out now, Slayer wants its fans to know that there will be a celebration of Jeff Hanneman’s life sometime later this month, along with Jeff’s family and friends, the public will be invited to attend. More information will be posted here soon.

Finally, the band released statements from guitarist Kerry King and singer-bassist Tom Araya, who for the most part had remained silent on Hanneman’s death until now:

Kerry King and Tom Araya are trying to deal with the loss of their brother by remembering some the good times they shared.

KERRY: “I had so many great times with Jeff…in the early days when we were out on the road, he and I were the night owls, we would stay up all night on the bus, just hanging out, talking, watching movies…World War II movies, horror movies, we watched “Full Metal Jacket” so many times, we could practically recite all of the dialogue.”

TOM: “When we first formed Slayer, we used to rehearse all the time, religiously, 24/7. Jeff and I spent a lot of time hanging out together, he lived in my father’s garage which was also our rehearsal space. When he got his own apartment, he had an 8-track and I would go there to record songs I’d written, not Slayer songs, other stuff I’d written. At a certain point, you still have the band but you start your own lives outside of the band, so that 24/7 falls to the side, you don’t spend as much time together as you once did. I miss those early days.”

KERRY: “He was a gigantic World War II buff, his father served in that war, so when Slayer played Russia for the first time – I think it was 1998 – Jeff and I went to one of Moscow’s military museums. I’ll never forget him walking around that place, looking at all of the tanks, weapons and other exhibits. He was like a kid on Christmas morning. But that was Jeff’s thing, he knew so much about WW II history, he could have taught it in school.”

TOM: “We were in New York recording South of Heaven. Jeff and I were at the hotel and we had to get to the studio – I think it was called Chung King, a real rundown place. So we left the hotel and decided to walk, but then it started raining. We walked maybe five blocks, and it was raining so hard, we were totally soaked, so we decided to get a cab. Here we are, two dudes with long hair and leather jackets, absolutely soaked, thumbing to the studio. No one would stop. We had to walk the entire way.”

TOM: “Jeff was a lifeline of Slayer, he wrote so many of the songs that the band will always be known for. He had a good heart, he was a good guy.”

i guess with all the down time and worry over whether he will ever perform again the poor guy drank his self to death . this just gets more tragic sounding

SLAYER CARRY ON WITH 2013 SUMMER EUROPEAN TREK
by Chad Childers May 9, 2013 4:44 PM

Slayer are still in mourning over the death of late guitarist Jeff Hanneman, but fellow guitarist Kerry King and frontman Tom Araya have signed online to let their European and U.K. fans know that it won’t dampen their plans to perform overseas this summer.

As it was, Hanneman had not been touring with Slayer over the past two years, with Exodus‘ Gary Holt taking his place since a 2011 spider bite forced Hanneman out of action. The pair took to their social networking sites to let fans know that they will be honoring their late brother on tour this summer. At present, it looks as though the band will be spending parts of all three summer months in the U.K. and Europe.

Their message reads as follows:

NOTE FROM TOM AND KERRY TO UK/EURO FANS:

We know that our fans everywhere are hurting for the loss of Jeff just as we are.
We want to let you all know that when we come to Europe this summer in June, July and August, we’ll ALL be making noise together for our brother and dear friend Jeff… We’ll See you then!

With the statement just coming from King and Araya, it seems that drummer Dave Lombardo would not be returning to the band for the European trek. The musician was replaced for their Australian tour this spring over an apparent contractual dispute and there has been no comment since as to whether Lombardo has been able to work things out with King and Araya.

The band used their onetime drummer Jon Dette to fill in during the Australian run and it is unknown if he will continue with the group this summer. However, it is expected that Exodus‘ Gary Holt will continue to play guitar with Slayer for these shows.

The cirrhosis revelation is surprising. It's like anything substance related, I suppose.
Where the line between partying and being a full on alcoholic lies.
I have no idea, but seems like this must have been a longtime thing that perhaps escalated while he was sitting around, attempting to recover.
I just assumed his death was related to the spider bite. Fuck.
It's scary to think that from the sound of it, he went into the hospital, possibly thinking he was just having bite related issues and then they came back and told him his liver was failing.
I can't even imagine what that would be like. Really depressing. Not just for what it's now done to him and Slayer. It makes me think, wonder about the extent of what I've done to myself.
It does just get worse and worse. I don't know...

i hope this lot get the fuck kicked out of them

Westboro Baptist Church Plan To Sing "Crazy Train" Parody While Picketing SLAYER Guitarist Jeff Hanneman's Funeral

Go away Westboro Baptist Church, nobody likes you…and you are really just asking for it at this point.

Shortly after news spread of Jeff Hanneman's passing last week, the modern day trolls in the Westboro Baptist Church came forward with some offensive tweets.

Pleased with the attnetion they were getting, the band of religious misfits decided to keep moving forward and plan to picket Jeff Hanneman's funeral. A new tweet from the Church reveals their plan:

Wait, what?! They wrote a parody of "Crazy Train"?! This can't be good. Turns out this is a thing they've done at previous funerals and it's sort of become their calling card. Naturally, the song is terrible:

The group deciding to pull this out of their hat, basically proves they are just hypocritical trolls. If they truly were serving God, wouldn't the last song they want to parody be that of a musician who goes by the moniker of the "Prince of Darkness?"

It just seems they are doing all of this to get more attention and it's just getting silly at this point. I really do hope they picket the funeral and then Slayer fans go absolutely nuts on them. Jeff wouldn't have it any other way.

In a more fitting tribute, check out this video of Slayer guitarist Kerry King's tribute to Jeff at the Revolver Golden Gods this past Thursday:

^ The problem is, WBC makes almost all of its money from lawsuits against people who attack them. What they should do, is set up a wall of amps between the WBC and the funeral, pointed at the WBC protestors, and blast Reign in Blood at full volume while all the mourners mosh and make obscene gestures.

thing is the law real have to step in here and stop these muppets getting any where near for god sake we are talking slayer fans not just your normal metal heads but slayer ones and jeffs death aint going to be taken lightly some one could easily get killed and this scum would just love that . they call the self's christens what about being that and letting his wife and family bury him without all the shit

^ There will be police there. The WBC calls ahead to make sure the police are there to protect their freedom of speech/expression from people who would otherwise violently assault them for being assholes. The WBC exists within a moral and legal grey area - they can get away with their protests because they are protected by the constitution, despite the fact they are hate mongers of the highest order.

but just look at the usa at the minute guns and nut jobs running wild bombs from kids and this is slayer a bunch of meth heads and satanist just lost a god

I don't know why the hell I clicked on that link, these people are truly venomous. They take pleasure being so hateful. At least Pat Boone's version was sort of funny. My dad was talking about WBC coming to a basketball game because of the player who announced he's gay. But funerals should be considered off limits for this type of protest or whatever they're trying to convey. It's the ultimate form of disrespect and just shows how sick this group of freaks really are.
