Hi guys,

I have a herniated disk in my back, so I was in chronic pain and needed opiates in order to go to work and function normally. I hurt it about 4-5 months ago. Since then I have been on either codeine or a combination of codeine and oxy. I currently take 10mg oxy + 50mg codeine three times a day. My back has gotten a lot better and I think it is time to get off the pain killers and try and get back into a normal routine of life.

I'm familiar with opiate withdrawal and I know I will definitely go through withdrawal here. I generally start to go through withdrawal after 6 hours of not taking the tablets.

I was thinking of either cutting down the oxy to one tablet (5mg) three times a day for a few days and keeping the codeine dose as is. Then after three or so days just having the codeine. Then after three or so days, ceasing all opiates.

I also need to do this because I have been taking more than my regular dose and will be finished way to early to go to the doctor.

Do you have any tips on how to go about doing this? Does this taper seem good? I think a taper is the way to go, rather than just jumping off cold turkey. Do you guys think I should go through bad withdrawal even with the taper?

I have 3 valium left and plenty of lyrica (pregabalin). I'll also stock up immodium.

A taper would minimize your withdrawal symptoms, I'm sure.
I would keep the lyrica, valium, and immodium for when you step off all of your opiates.
Then use that to help with your symptoms.
I heard lyrica is great for preventing RLS and other physical symptoms.
I think you have a good plan going on and I hope everything works out for you!
Cheers :)

Thanks buddy.

In regards to the lyrica. I take it anyway for sciatica (nerve pain in my leg). I take 300mg a day so I'll continue taking that and I guess if the withdrawal is bad when I taper I could take a bit more.

Also, is it likely that I will get 're-bound pain' in my back when stopping opiates or would that be the true pain coming through? I've been trying to live a normal life and also gone out to some gigs and dance excessively for a few hours. I haven't noticed much, if any increase in pain. I take this as a good sign.

Just out of interest, how bad do you think the withdrawal would be if I went cold turkey?

Well, during WD you will most likely experience that re-bound pain and it will lighten up after about a week or so.
I do suggest increasing your lyrica if you do in fact start feeling really bad.
With my experience of cold turkey - its worse than a tapper but doesn't last as long - with taper it tends to be a little longer.
With your habit I a cold turkey attempt wouldn't be too bad! I would go for it :)
