Powerful performance (Bowie)



Anyone else feel this?

To be honest, I've never even liked Bowie. Think this is the first thing I've seen of him that I've even liked. He's just always come across as very cold and sadistic, with that Nazi-looking thin slit for a mouth, and completely alien to me.

But now in his old age he seems to have become a lot warmer and agreeable. Also looking great and remarkably well-preserved for a 60-year old (I guess that would be his Martian genetics).

Anyway, whenever I watch this performance I become completely tranfixed and hypnotized from beginning to end. It's so powerful, heartfelt, and stirs something really deep inside of you.

I can't really compare it to anything else I've seen, and I'm quite sensitive about musical differences, so what do you think?

God, I can fap to a thread about Bowie's Life on Mars. You are moved by the end result, open your mind farther I think. You're hooked to the silver screen. What about when he was the revolution! I always appreciated his vulnerability, honesty, and oddities.
 
We loved David Bowie as kids and our parents couldn't stand him because he looked so freaky. That was part of the appeal as one of the original glam pioneers. Caught two of his live shows in Miami and both his performances were absolutely stunning. <3

I was afraid not many would get this. Having said that, it's this version, and maybe the more recent ones that I like. The original video with the blue eye shadow does nothing for me. In his young years he seemed to be more about image, outlandish ideas, extraterrestrial life - and that was about it. He couldn't sing, he couldn't perform, and he had a dislikeable personality for the most part.

What a changeover - must have gone through some pretty life-changing transformations to get there. Now he's actually a fascinating personality who's found his masculinity (much more becoming, and actually very powerful, who would have thought?). Instead of skipping around like a girl with the latest make-up on and sprinkled in stardust.

Like you, his power and masculinity turn me on, but more than anything his heartfelt soul and powerful emotion in this one (seems like something deeply personal to him, like he's delving into his subconscience, and gets in touch with some deep trauma). You can tell that it hurts when he sings.

I think this is the hardest part which hits you really hard, whether you plan to or not, and really makes you emphatise. I also think "She" is a metaphor for "I" to make it less personal, as well as the rest of the song, so it's hard to make it out, though it could also be taken at face-value.

So he finally opened himself up so much that it hurt. And now he can sing and perform what amounts to a great song (shows what a change delivery makes). And if only all men aged liked that. When's the next shuttle to Mars scheduled?
 


I think this can compete, but on a different level. Very healing and comforting to listen to when you need it.

Elvis was really a master healer. His voice, and just his very presence, was very healing. It was almost like he was set on the world stage to help heal humanity or to bring us those healing energies.

He was a master of love and knew the secret to true healing, healing on all levels, physical, psychological, and spiritual: Love and higher consciousness. Like the ancient healers heal just as much spiritually as by physical means.

But he knew this and was capable of it on some level. That just being around a spiritually higher evolved being could help make someone heal. By their healing aura, their healing energies, the healing emotions they would project towards them, etc. Like projecting negative emotions on someone sick (like many are guilty of now) can only make them worse.

Also, you're not capable of doing much healing on someone you're not on a higher consciousness and higher vibration of love of (apart from the strictly technical kind). But there seem to be few complete healers who understands the full art of healing anymore. How valuable they would be too.

What a load of codswallop. If he couldn't perform nor sing etc how did he become so popular and famous? And how did this affect his personality, did you meet him? Where does your opinion of his personality come from?

Hold on, that is just my own perceptipon and reaction to him. I was born before his time and never saw anything that appealed to me. But this particular version of that song really blew me away. And I think he has changed in many ways. I have a right to state my opinion. Yours might be something very different but why's that got to be a problem for any of us???

Discussing artist should be something fun, not something that leads to hostilities, how unnecessary.

Yeah bunny's post came off as some what aggressive, but genuine intent, mood, and sarcasm can be wrongly perceived on teh webz sometimes especially when in this case it's just one comment

I just thought he over-reacted and that was totally unnecessary. We all like what we like and shouldn't have to be attacked for our perceptions of something. Maybe we weren't that old or paying that much attention at the time, but still.

And I thought it was my humour that was passing him by, what with the comments about him skipping around like a girl with the latest in eye make-up, and covered in stardust. It wasn't even inappropriate, but I guess something the right person could be very angered by, or maybe he just saw it as a way for me to devalue David Bowie.

Anyway, like I said, unnecessary hostility. And I'd also like to post another performance that blew my mind at the time, maybe I was alone in this, but it really made my jaw drop and I thought WTF is that?



Reasons: Heart-piercingly felt, unparalelled intensity, and other-wordly body-language. Along with the other "extra stuff". Very hypnotising performance and the voice donesn't even need mentioning.

Also seem to recall you like Radiohead?
 
Sometimes it takes that one performance for you to start to understand what a musician is all about. Hopefully, this one will help you open your mind a bit more to David Bowie and possibly dive into his catalogue. Dude was, and still is, amazing. Great version of a classic, too. Nice post. I fucking love David Bowie.
 
Sorry if that came across ss hostile, but I was curious as to why Ninae was able to discern about his life changing transformations alluded to. From my perspective, Bowie has always been a pretty amazing guy, with attitude right there in ya face. It seems to me that he has mellowed like a pensioner and has turned into a rod Stewart clone.
I thought that the music on the video clip posted was pretty much just like the original version, and I suggest that if you were to listen to each version without watching the video, it would be difficult to pick the difference. So, that's why I ask how you can tell the difference between his personality/ lifestyle differences between making the original and the one posted.
No doubt, being a 20 something year old rocker in the 70's, he will have had some radical changes in becoming an elderly rocker in the present day (though the maturity is not as obvious when you see Iggy Pop perform) but i fail to see that difference in his performance.

I just thought the difference was so obvious, I didn't imagine it could be missed by anyone.

I've always had respect for Bowie, as he commands respect, and used to say he's a cool guy but I wouldn't listen to his records (cause I hadn't heard any I liked).

And that first version of "Life on Mars" is thin and squaky. He hasn't learned to sing powerfully yet. Also, he comes across as a self-obsessed new pop-star and his image in that stage doesn't appeal to me.

Some of the transformation I was talking about is that he now seems more "Warm", i.e. he has more love, which I'm attracted to. He used to have a very cold appearance, but now just look at his expression when he sings, "See the mice in their million hordes". That's something I can like. It's also intensely emotionally felt, which the first version wasn't, more like a theatrical performance he was doing.

I agree he has mellowed, but in a good way, and nothing like Rod Stewart. He comes across more like an aged teenager/20-something who young people would enjoy hanging out with. I'd prefer him to many guys my age. His attitude is very much like a young persion, nothing like the avergae 60 year old, and, like I said, looks great for his age.

So that's how I see it, but I guess we don't all see the same things. And, yes, sometimes it takes the right thing or for us yet or been in a place where we could appreciate it. With so many musical artists now...it's kind of random really....doesn't really speak anything about you.

So basically all you're trying to say is Bowie is hotter to you now than when he was young & hip?
 
I mean I prefer him and that performance beats the others I've seen.

Well, he IS a hot old man. He comes across more as a still attractive man in his 40s or have you seen many men over sixty with such a good physique and youthful personality? He has also become warmer and more masculine, which I also like.

I wonder what he did different to Mick Jagger? Sure he also had his share of partying. Superior genes? Outstanding man nontheless. Comparable to none, really.

Yes, so it's not like I'm acquinted with his whole musical carreer. Practically none of it if I'm going to be honest about it. Anyway, I still have eyes and ears to see.
 
And somehow a 6th sense to know what his personality is like off of him singing a song that he's been singing for 30 or so years.
And I wouldn't be surprised if he's got make up on in this performance. He's just not rocking it so flamboyantly.
 
As a matter of fact he also sat down for an interview afterwards when it was first broadcast.

Anyway, I would assume anyone could perceive the difference in his personality. People can change throughout their lives. In the 60s Mick Jagger was a good-looking, engaging, humble, courteous personality, who used his intelligence for serious issues that mattered instead of just gloryfying himself.



A bit of a loss to humanity, really. Look at the intelligence in his eyes and how he more than holds his own among those authorities. There's much to like about him how he was then. Typical English public schoolboy, though, with intellect more advanced than most his age (and in his case most above his age). Another example of dumbing down to appeal to the masses.



Oh, how the mighty have fallen, the idea of him now makes me feel sick.

Perhaps not everyone tend to notice it like that but I enjoy studying people and the smallest changes in them. As for Bowie, he might as well be a different person for me now, but he must be allowed to change with age like anyone else.
