Pot Or Not - New Rules / Concept Changes

After reviewing the archive, it would seem only natural to change the on-going 'Pot or Not' thread to:

Premium Pot or Not; or something similar.

I do not see anything that even remotely resembles the 'Not' of Pot or Not.

So, what is the point? I enjoy the thread, and do wish to continue seeing new, diverse post.

I've been browsing this forum for much longer than my account creation date, and the number of ridiculously high-grade marijuana pictures a far greater than that of average or above average pictures. I said nothing about enjoying or posting a string of bad, Mexican dirt weed pictures. I do think that variety is nice, and would bring about a balance to the entire archive. Perhaps the Strain Review thread could ceaselessly post and talk about high-grade Sinsemilla. And the Pot or Not thread could be reserved for all types of marijuana, including: The Good, The bad, and The Ugly... I was not seriously suggesting the threads name be changed. I was proving a point.

I would actually say that withhold a few single exceptions; average to above average pictures are nonexistent. Hot or Not is not solely comprised of 10+ babes... I'm guessing that's where the crafty name was taken from.

My idea for a change would be:

Pot or Not Prelims

All submissions are sent to 1 moderator for the first half of the duration of the prelims. The mod chooses 16 of the total submissions. Two pictures are posted, Pot A, and Pot B.

Each vote lasts ten days. This will be voted on using the normal scale and take into the normal considerations - trim job, T count, general appearance, etc. There are two voting options, Pot A, or Pot B. As this is a PHOTO compition, and we cannot smoke the product nor smell it, photo quality will be a deciding factor in which pictures make the submission


So then we're left with 8 winners and move onto the competition. Same premise as before. Pot A v Pot B in a bracket system. Again, the mod will do all the work

Rules:
* There is no grading scale. There are two voting chooses, Pot A or Pot B. You vote based off of how you normally would.
* No strain names - half the time these are made up by submitters. This can often cause people choosing preference.
* Each submission comes with a description of the high - sativa or Indica feel, characteristics such as smell and high duration, etc. You should include experience (smoking for X years) as well in the PM.
* Submissions are rolling (for those of you who have not applied to college or contests, this means there is no last entry date) for the FIRST HALF OF THE PRELIMS. The main reason for this is sometimes submissions can be slow.

Obviously we need enough submissions to make this work. I can volunteer to do this for you guys if this is something that seems like a popular idea.

Any input on this idea would be welcome, or any other ideas as well... I'm only going to do this if it has the support needed to make it work.

Well, my point is that over 75% of the samples photographed in Pot or Not are most definitely not A's and a fair amount of that 75% aren't even B's.

Just because some people think that the best of the best are being shown in Pot or Not doesn't make it so.


To give a good feel for what I mean, I can only remember grading a picture A three times since I regained access to the internet and BL August of 2009. That number may be give or take a few because a year's a lot of time to forget shit.

If you mean making a preliminary thread to get into Pot or Not, that's not a bad idea. It's kind of like that already, though, all you have to do is PM a CD mod with a submission and they decide when and if they'll throw a poll up for it.

And plus, if we all look at the prelim thread then what's the point of having the Pot or Not thread? I'm foreseeing less accurate voting because people will have already been exposed to the pictures once. I know when I'm looking for some bud porn I don't want to see things I've already looked at before. I want to see new colors, new trichome formations, beautiful blend of hairs/bud/amber trichs.


It could work, though, I'm just a pessimistic cynic is all.

This sounds great. Rather than watering down the submissions, we can simply change the format. The absence of grading and tournament-like setup both sound very appealing. I can not think of anything to add.

Again, I never once mentioned anything about rather or not the grades that the submitted buds received were accurate or not. It is relative, and because a vast majority of the submissions have appeared to be high-grade, you consistently have an A/B war going on. It's old and tiresome.

I'm digging the new concept that Chainer has proposed. Far more engaging than the current concept. What good comes of staying stagnant? Let the Pot or Not thread blossom into something more beautiful.

I was going to say:

"Dude, look at Nickelback. That is not good bud. That's what I smoke if I can't get a hold of what's considered midgrade where I'm from. Pot or Not isn't all good bud, look at--"

and then I decided to go looking for a quick picture of shitty bud from a recent pot or not, which I thought would be easy. I got to the bottom of the first page of CD archives and realized I hadn't found one sample that was below a B+.


Apparently my view of Pot or Not is from way back in the day when I remember seeing some really shitty bud put up there when user submissions were really low.




I still think Pot or Not should consist of good-looking buds, though. I don't want to spend my free time looking at buds that, if given the chance to smoke, wouldn't excite me at all. It'd get me high and I'd be content, but I like seeing pictures in Pot or Not of nugs that I drool and dream about and only get to smoke once in a blue moon. Seriously, who wants to vote on pictures of shitty bud? and, to use a British (I think?) term, it'd take the piss right out of somebody to find out that while they thought they were smokin' on some $25/g shit they really got ripped off and have a picture of something looking like Nickelback.

The "pre-prelims" are done by the mod, yes. And I'm not suggesting using old Pot or Not pictures, I'm saying we use all new submissions. Sorry if that was unclear, or maybe I'm not understanding what issue is being raised here.

The idea was basically a re-haul of Pot or Not, as I feel it moves *very* slowly currently and the rating essentially means nothing. A bracketed tourny would be more fun, at least to me. Maybe re-read the concept I posted after reading the above and it may make more sense to ya.

This version of Pot or Not would narrow it down to the best of the best. If it's a success, I think that's what the new format of Pot or Not would be - and for once, the name would fit just fine. One picture gets eliminated every 10 days until we are left with a winner.

The Pot of Not thread does state that the images will be updated weekly. Maybe we should see if we can manage that first?

Which is why I imagine the previous idea would do a bit better. With a rolling submission for the first 30 or so days, and with it being tourny style, we can probably offer some sort of custom title (don't hold me to that - I'm not sure we do that still) for the overall winner. Plus, the tourny would only start if the submissions look promising.

I feel like I could get the word out. I know several BLers here at BL that, if asked, could provide AMAZING photos. It's just a lack of work being done to get it done. If the community actually would like to see my idea or a re-worked version of Pot or Not done, I would be willing to do the leg work. I'm just trying to guage interest before I committed to something rather time consuming ontop of the modding already required.

Trust me the custom user titles are way more trouble than they are worth. That's the reason I don't do PM's on here anymore. Way too many nutbags contacting me.

I like the rework idea Chainer. It sounds like it is going to be a lot of work for you on top of the amazing job you are already doing here, let me know if you need any help.

I think beamish has the photography skills but Arobskittle has consistently produced some of the most amazing pics over the last few years. Should be interesting.

It would be good to get some international submissions as well.....

i think the name remains more because of nostalgia than anything. it's a tradition, and traditions are upheld to impart on those who celebrate them a feeling of homecoming

^^ Monotonous, meaningless tradition holds no nostalgia with me. For those that it does - Well... it is time to move onto better things and allow room for improvements. I hands down would like to see Chainers idea implemented. I, of course, would contribute my own best photo's. I'm sure others would, too. However, I do not know how much effort the supporting MOD(s) would have to exercise to accomplish this. After all, they are not getting paid to do this...

Rather it replaces pot or not, is added in addition to, or is simply temporary; does not matter to me. What does matter is that something is done about the dragging thread. The ratings for the poll mean absolutely nothing. I'd find it far more interesting to see the same photo's placed under 'Strain Review' with a valid bud synopses, rather than a ceaseless A/B-War with the same, repetitive analysis.
