God, there are so many. The first ones to come to the top of my mind (in no particular order of preference):
Brand New
The White Stripes (or anything else Jack White is involved in)
Switchfoot
Gorillaz (Demon Days is such a perfect album for while on drugs)
Virgin Black

There are a lot of others that would've been close to being in the list, such as Neutral Milk Hotel and Death Grips, but those are probably the top five for me.

If we're talking rock I'm all about that alternative stuff. Chevelle, This Town Needs Guns, Muse, Sum 41, Radiohead, MBV. I'm not that into metal but I sometimes listen to Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, mostly alternative metal, nothing too heavy.

When it comes to hip hop, I like the more popular stuff like Kanye, Chance, Drake, Mike Will Made It, J. Cole, Kendrick, Jay Rock, Ace Hood, Yo Gotti, Tech N9ne, Mac Miller. Some underground stuff like Action Bronson, B. Dolan, Jonwayne, (so pretty much any fat white guy with a beard haha), Joey Badass, Pyramid Vritra, Black Milk, Cyhi the Prynce, Murs. And some guilty pleasures, like Young Thug, Migos, Rae Sremmurd, Que, 2 Chainz, Chief Keef, Lil Mouse, Lil Durk, Lil Herb (all the Lils, I guess), SD (but he's really good so I don't feel all that guilty) ,Peewee Longway, and Short Dawg. I also like instrumental stuff like Knxwledge, Mndsgn, FlyLo, 9th Wonder, all that shit.

Damn you and your brevity!

(Also, curse this 'being sick, in bed' business that gave me time to write that dissertation)

I don't care about genres I listen to a lot of different artists. My favorites are:

Eminem, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, NOFX, Infected Mushroom, Nakatomi, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Lenka, Jethro Tull and Goran Bregovic.

(plus like 100 hungarian artists/bands, but there's no chance that you guys heard of any of them, so I'll leave that alone :D )

Not quite Magyar but i do love it
Ougenweide • Willkommen

You shall welcome me:
Because it is me who brings you news.
Everything you have hitherto heard
Is nothing at all: Ask me then!
But I do demand compensation.
If the meed is good
I may tell you what pleases you.
See what is offered to me.

I will bring news to German dames,
so that they will appeal to the world
even more.
This I will due without much reward.
For what should I ask from them?
They are too elegant for me.
This is why I am modest and ask for nothing
But their regards.

I have visited many lands
and always gayly seen the best ones.
But woe is me
if I were ever able to convince my heart
to like foreign
customs.
What would I get if I told lies??
German chastity is better than all the others.

From the Elbe to the Rhine
and back to Hungary,
there are the best people
I have ever seen.
If I am able to
evaluate good demeanour and looks,
by God, I would like to swear that in this country women
are better than anywhere else.

German men are well accomplished,
and the women look like angels.
He who chides them lies to himself;
otherwise I cannot fathom him.
If someone seeks virtue
and pure love,
he must come to our country: here pleasance dwells.
I would like to live here a long time!

She whom I served for a long time
and whom I will continue to serve all the time
I will not give up.
But she harms me so cruelly.
She hurts both my
heart and mind.
May God forgive her that she sins against me.
Maybe she will change her mind then.

my top two are Grimes and Lana Del Ray, probably in that order. been that way for a few years now. honorable mention to FKA twigs, who i think has as much to offer but hasn't put out all that much content yet.

when i was younger my favorite was Jefferson Airplane. before that, Jack Off Jill and The Distillers. and my first favorite was Green Day.

I wanted to be a jerk and make you all re read this. :) I like ... Phish Jefferson Airplane Grateful Dead Stone Temple Pilots Big Brother and the Holding Company Rush Pink Floyd AC/DC Frank Zappa Deep Purple Led Zeppelin Sound Garden A lot of the bands above my post and way too many to list.

^ haha, i studied it very closely.
Sorry for such an obnoxious post. My taste is very eclectic and changes constantly depending on my mood, etc etc.
I cant possibly name a small list of favourites because i deeply love so much music.
If i had to just name one band though, it's the Velvet Underground.

I am exactly the same way spacejunk. I am eclectic also, mood has a lot to do with it, I just find it harder to put into words sometimes because my taste are all over the map. I like giving credit to say, my top five, but a lot of the artists are way too overplayed or better yet redundant or obvious. Credit belongs to some of the lesser known bands, for one, simply to give them the credit they deserve. People, skip the obvious and, list some deeper, less known bands. Here are a few bands that get less recognition then they should : The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Ray's Music Exchange, Ekoostic Hookah, J. Miller Band, Boombox, to name a few. Keep rocking everybody. Bluelighters, FTW.

Favorite artists: Tyler the Creator, Snoop Dogg, Amy Winehouse, Willie Nelson, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, Earl Sweatshirt, B.B. King.
Favorite bands: Odd Future, Marilyn Manson, Metallica.

currently listening to Blur-BeetleBum, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, zona ganjah, Gorrilaz, Blue Oyster Cult- Don't Fear the Reaper c:

Nicolas Jaar can do no wrong.

From indie leaning electronic

to driving, analog synth driven techno a la Helena Hauff.

He can make monastic ambient music which repurposes a rave siren into a dirge-y drone, anchoring Rhodes piano licks and digital funeral drums.

Or a convincing disco track that starts with noisey, ominous walls of horn that would feel right in the movie Inception.

Even when releasing clubby house music, he pays attention to the composition, playing with forms, and turning them into a dramatic suite

He is my favorite still active artist in electronic music these days, very good music to listen to and consider.

Was posted in wrong thread so I’m moving it here
