I have been addicted to poppy tea and have used it every day for the least year. If I stop using it I get bad withdrawals. Although very pleasurable, it often seems like a dirty high. I use it for the morphine effects but have heard that it contains 50 some odd other alkaloids. Although I usually get a strong morphine feeling it does feel like there are many other effects including stimulation, muscle relaxation, and just plain intoxication. I was wondering if you all might know if drinking poppy tea every day for say a year would cause significant brain damage and if there are particularly any toxic alkaloids in the poppy plant? I sometimes think I feel different and the tea doesnt effect me like it used to. I have read that one of the symptoms of habitual opium use is mental deterioration which isnt a pretty sight. However, Coffee is a drink that contains many other alkaloids other than Caffeine and people drink that every day for years without any problems.
I dont know.

You quit using, you will eventually go back to normal. You're neurotransmitters will seem very dull for a long while before they heal. Poppy tea does not have toxic alkoloids. The tea doesnt affect you like it used to because you have a major tolerance to it and your brain/body have adjusted to the effects. If you stop for a while, then do it again, you will get the glowing good feeling you got when you were first getting into it. Muscle relaxation, stimulation, and "just plain intoxication" are all assotiated with morphine use..though not everyone gets stimulated on it...a lot do though.

You're right. Coffee contains many other alkaloids in it other than coffee and many people have no problems with drinking it every day..cept mild headaches are common with coffee. Cannabis also has many many other alkaloids in it other than THC, and a lot of people can smoke it every day for years without any real problems.

I am drinking some poppy tea now as we speak. I used four pods and am not really feeling it yet. How many does it take to catch a buzz?

^It depends on the size of the pod, and the potency of the pod. Try grinding all your pods up and then peasuring out about 2-3 tablespoons of powder and use that.

Oh and to answer your question...I am 99% sure that poppy tea doesn't cause any sort of brain damage. I mean..there are no studies that say opium causes brain damage..and poppy tea contains basically opium in a solution...so there is no reason that poppy tea would cause brain damage if opium doesn't.

I have found a good way to do it. I peel of the triangles running around the crown of the cap. Then I suck the small amount of 'o' that oozes out. I have discovered that some caps secrete more than others. I just suck on this and it tastes strong and a bit mustard like. Sometimes I have to take a few gulps of water if the taste gets overpowering. This works well for me.

I doubt there is any evidence one way or the other. I would be concerned about any possible pesticides, depending on where you got the pods from.

yea, on poppies.org they discuss pesticides being used in the growth of poppies. Some poppies are grown in third world countries where there is little to no enforcement on what pesticides to use. And, it is not rated for human consumption. hrmm
