so i read through the supplements thread, and i decided i wanted to try piracetam out. i am in the US, and i understand that it is legal to have piracetam without a prescription for personal use. well i went online looking to buy some and i came across a website which sold it. i was about to start buying it when i realized the website also sold a bunch of things that you would need a prescription for (l-deprenyl, reminyl, doxepil, etc) which made me hesitate. as long as i am buying something legal, does it matter if i buy it from a sketchy website? or, do people in the US know better places to get it?

i know we're not supposed to ask for sources, but i think this question is ok bc it is legal (so it's sort of like asking, 'where can i buy some caffeine')

i would avoid buying anything from those sites, and just find it at another site that concentrates on nootropics. i would feel iffy about a place that sells prescription meds. you can probably find it cheaper somewhere else anyways

iwas helped via pm:)
anyone know the legal status of deprenyl? i was informed that it is in a 'grey area' between legal and illegal...

you know you can import prescription meds from overseas and the FDA doesn't care if it's a 90 day supply or less. there's nothing sketchy about the types of sites selling prescription drugs, especially ones like Deprenyl. but, regardless, don't buy piracetam from whoever you're thinking of. search google for 'piracetam bulk'. any more than $40/kilogram is a ripoff. and a kilogram's a few years' supply.

Piracetam can be purchased OTC at more and more places in the US. Hit me with a PM and I can name one of the top of my head.

the website i used sold half a kilogram in powderfor 14 bucks, but i stuck with the capsules bc i don't have a scale to measure out the doses of something that comes in bulk powder (does everyone use a scale for this?)

anyway my real question is what dose is about right? on bluelight it seems like people are using anywhere from 500-4000 mg of piracetam, and the bottle says take 3 800 mg capsule 3-4 times a day?? i was thinking of taking at most 3 capsules a day, maybe two. what doses do you guys recommend?

When I started taking Piracetam, I would take 1 800 mg pill, than take another 800 mg pill a couple of hours later. After a few days I would doubledose, or take 1600 in one sitting. Since I don't really take piracetam on a regular basis (usually when I feel kind of foggy/sluggish/clouded up in the brain or need a nootropic pick me up) this seems to suit me just fine when I do.

Untrue! This is a myth. Importing controlled drugs into the U.S. without a doctor's prescription can get you in trouble (even if its just 1 pill). It probably won't, but it can.

Piracetam on the other hand is uncontrolled in the U.S. (but not approved for human consumption)

^ I personally take 2400mg 3x per day, along with 4.5mg of Hydergine twice a day.

Is this stuff for real ? If i understand correctly nootropics protect the brain, give you engergy, concentration and motivation. And make you live longer. So why isnt EVERYONE using this stuff ALL THE TIME ?

Its effects are either exaggerated or theres a major conspiracy goin on...or both

Each nootropic works differently for each person. Piracetam I find improves my concentration slightly, but has dramatically imrpoved the clarity of my vision as well as improved my night vision. Which in my line of work is VERY important.

The Hydergine I take for a couple of reasons. First to help my Tinnitus.....whic when combined with Ginko seems to work so-so. Secondly to help the oxygen supply to my brain. There is a history of stroke amongst the men on my dads side of the family, so I'm taking any and all precautions that I can before it would happen to me (if it indeed would) to improve my chances of recovery.

Direct from the FDA circa 2001:

Under FDA's personal importation policy, as described in guidance to the Agency's field personnel, FDA inspectors may exercise enforcement discretion to permit the importation of certain unapproved prescription medication for personal use.

First adopted in 1954, the policy has been modified several times over the succeeding years. It was last modified in 1988, in response to concerns that certain potentially effective treatments for AIDS patients were not available in the U.S., but were available in other countries. The Agency expanded the guidance for humanitarian purposes to allow individuals suffering from serious medical conditions to acquire medical treatments legally available in foreign countries but not approved in the U.S.

The current policy permits the exercise of enforcement discretion to allow entry of an unapproved prescription drug if:

* the product is for personal use (a 90-day supply or less, and not for resale);
* the intended use is for a serious condition for which effective treatment may not be available domestically (and, therefore, the policy does not permit inspectors to allow foreign versions of U.S.-approved drugs into the U.S.);
* there is no known commercialization or promotion to U.S. residents by those involved in the distribution of the product;
* the product is considered not to represent an unreasonable risk; and
* the individual seeking to import the product affirms in writing that it is for the patient's own use and provides the name and address of the U.S. licensed doctor responsible for his or her treatment with the product or provides evidence that the product is for the continuation of a treatment begun in a foreign country.

More importantly, in the same statement:

At mail facilities, Customs officials identify parcels that may be violative of the FD&C Act. FDA inspectors then determine if these products should or should not be permitted to enter the country. If detained, FDA must issue a notice to the addressee describing the potential Federal violation and provide the individual with an opportunity to respond. If the addressee does not respond or provides an inadequate response, FDA will give the parcel back to Customs to have it returned to the exporter. Due to the requirements for notice and the opportunity to respond, the process for detaining and further processing mail parcels consumes large amounts of FDA resources. In addition, much storage space would be needed to hold the large number of detained parcels pending replies from the addressees.

FDA's personal importation policy, as written, is difficult to implement. This is due, at least in part, to the difficulty faced by FDA inspectors, or even health care practitioners, in identifying a medicine by its appearance, and labeling may falsely identify a product. From a practical standpoint, FDA inspectors cannot examine drug products contained in a mailed parcel and accurately determine the identity of such drugs or the degree of risk posed to the individual who will receive these drugs.

FDA detains and refuses few mail imports for personal use. As a consequence, the tens of thousands of parcels that FDA does not review are eventually released by Customs and sent on to their addressees, even though the products contained in these parcels may appear to violate the FD&C Act and may pose a health risk to consumers. We do not believe this is an acceptable public health outcome and are working to develop a solution.

Pressure from governors, senators, and congressmen on the FDA and US Customs to allow their constituents to continue to import prescription drugs from Canada and overseas has kept this policy going. The representatives do not want to piss off the very important elderly demographic so the government is leaning towards outright establishing a legal channel for important prescription drugs - it won't be that long before it's completely legal instead of just a grey area.

is piracetam quick in-quick out....that is, does taking it only improve your cognitive functioning for a couple hours (so you would have to redose throughout the day)?

also, i was reading the insert in some fish oil capsules, which said that their ingredients were to counter the overabundance of omega-6 fats in our diets, but i noticed that a flaxseed oil supplement i am already taking has omega-6 in it...what is up with omega-6? is it 'bad' for you?

and, while i'm at it, how does piracetam compare to aniracetam?

Not so much 'bad' for you, but bad if the ratio to Omega 3 and 9 are off. I forget the average US ratio, but it's way off. I personally shoot for a 1:1 ratio, or at the very worst a 2:1.

The body needs all of the fatty acids to function, but an overabundance of Omega 6 is what causes elevated cholesterol, and all that other good stuff.

I find that 250mg DMAE seems to give it a bit more pep. Supposed to be a choline precurser that crosses the BBB very well.

i'm still trying to figure out whether piracetam is something i should take the day i am studying/writing a paper, etc or whether it is something that should 'build' up in the system....my logic tells me that since it increases blood flow between the two hemispheres of the brain (i think?) that it can be used on an as-needed basis, but from what has been written on this board, it seems like it works better if used every day...or is that just bc people want to be enhanced all the time? also has anyone stopped taking it and felt foggier?

My experience with it has been positive. I usually take 3 800mg caps per day with either choline or fish oil. I don't take it every day, but most. I may take a little extra before I have to study or take an exam. Usually if I'm going out to the bar I'll take about 4 or 5 caps just because it seems to make me more confident and I seem to always have a good time. Some days I will forget, and occasionally I will take a week or so off of it(which I think is a good idea anyway). I've never felt foggy headed doing this.

I take it daily but don't take the DMAE every day as it revs me up to much. From what I have read no one seems to agree with regards to its mode of action. One theory I read proposed an increase in neurotransmitter receptors. To me it seems like something you need to take dail, or nearly daily, with perhaps some off time here and there.

Picacetam stack & Shelf life

Just wondering if anyone knows if Picacetam goes bad after a certain period of time? I've got a heap of bulk powder. It does tend to clump a bit, but it was like that when I got it.

Also in terms of supplmenting it I dont want to go over board. Would it and just a Choline be enough?

Cheers

Alex

piracetam versus aniracetam versus oxiracetam

ok i have given piracetam capsules a run and so far i have liked what i am seeing, so i am going to buy bulk powder of one/a combination of these three...what i am wondering is which one do people find to be the 'best'? i know everyone is different, but i'm still curious re: popular opinion. has anyone had greater success combining two or more of these?
