In this short story published in 1967 China runs the world, people are controlled with hallucinogens that induce mass hypnosis, and the main character is a party official responsible for ideological purity of California's school curriculum. And then things start to get weird.

I can highly recommend UBIK he wrote it after his stroke and it blew my mind, such a scary vision of the afterlife.

I read a lot of him, through a scanner darkly I recommend from the druggy perspective.

That book is inspired, this short story condenses that but goes further into the spiritual crisis that was just starting for him... they were written close together.
