Is it good for pain? I heard that Barbiturates was like the younger brother of Benzo's? I couldn't find much about it. Was just curious.

Phenobarbital was largely discontinued in the states for use in humans due to the addictive risks. It is still used as a pain reliever/ sedating drug for animals though, especially dogs.

Benzodiazepines younger brother?? You mean Benzodiazepines fuckin daddy! Barbiturates are way more hardcore than benzodiazepines, if you can imagine, EVEN WORSE withdrawals, much more abused and while the weaker ones such as phenobarbital are widely used in under developed countries for managing seizure disorders. However, in developed nations it is rarely the first, or even second line treatment because we have access to much better anticonvulsants with less hardcore risks than barbiturates.

I'd avoid 'em, the only barbiturates that are remotely good are secobarbital and amobarbital, neither of which I would want to take with any regularity or depend on for any medical condition whatsoever (They're rarely prescribed these days for severe insomnia that's unresponsive to all other medications)

Barbituates aren't meant for pain relief, like tricomb said not much prescribed anymore for seizure disorder at least here in the states. I took phenobarbital back in the 70's recreationally. But really just makes you sleep heavily more than anything. Once I miscalculated the time it would take tuinal to hit me and I fell down the basement steps. They are harsh drugs and tread carefully

One thing that should be said about phenobarbital for those that don't know is that, one, it is a shit drug, and two, do not take this in combination if you are opiate dependent as it will cause withdrawal to occur much sooner. You'll often hear methadone patients say thins like "Adderall eats up the methadone!" (A fact which isn't true)... Well phenobarbital does eat up methadone and other opiates.

Wonder if that hold true for ALL barbs. My GF gets Butabital, which I know is not as strong. But during my opiate W/D I took them, for 4-5 days. Along with K-pins though, so W/D was easy. Hard part is never going back!

I totally agree with you. Tried phenobarbital tablets like 10 years ago (when in Greece, where it was available under the counter), but I found them to be sedating in an uncomfortable way, somewhat like neuroleptics. I didn't find them euphoric or very anxiolytic either. I would rate the crappiest benzos like oxazepam and Librium much higher than pheno..

It would be fun to try one of the short-acting barbs though, like seconal, but that will probably never happen.

I don't know about pain killing effects but in the 80's it was used to put kids to sleep (Im guessing more add Kid types) Like myself. Peace. Just my 2 cents.

from my research notes

phenobarbital is still used medically as a "last resort" anticonvulsant and in some cases of persistent anxiety/insomnia (or by quacks). generally it is considered to be the least recreational of the barbiturates. this is in large part due to its long onset, 120+ hour half life in some individuals, and reports that even mild overdoses can lead to it hitting you like a ton of bricks... the experience from what i understand is more akin to taking hiugh dose antipsychotics, but minus the motor tics... you become a total zombie and not in a good way. unconciousness is probably preferable to staying awake and drooling (unlike xanax)

save it for an emergency sedative if you have it, but dont go out of your way to go for a pheno script... the benzos are safer and equally as efficacious (read: not for very long)
