Does anyone know Hyden's first name? He's that guy that invented the Metso, Piano Forte thing for sheet music....

"If rock'n'roll had another name, it would be Chuck Berry" -John Lennon
Chuck Berry invented the rock dictionary. Without him, things would be vastly different.

as much as I love 311 (well.. used to), I don't think they've really had a deep impact on the music world.

Now, impact on their fans is a another story..

Sorry, didn't realize the impact had to be deep....

Deep Impacting Musicians= Run DMC

RUN DMC was the first mainstream rap group. They're pioneers. Maybe not to the degree that Miles Davis, Elvis, or Franz Haydn have, but without RUN DMC, (and Def Jam Records for that matter), hip hop today might not even be present in mainstream culture (for better or for worse). The early artists that Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons signed forever changed the face of the pop culture we have been raised in for the most part.

As incredible I think Nirvana is, compared to the emotionally shallow music Run DMC made, I would venture to say that Nirvana has less of a cultural impact in the grand scheme of things. They definately were a staple of the grunge movement, but that has come and gone, hip hop is still here. (mainly because it's more accessible due to more of a focus on candy than substance). But as the thread title states "People That Shaped The Furture Of Music".

I think that's a gigantic impact. 311 on the other hand are extremely talented and make some meaningful music, but what did they pioneer. Where have they out-excelled a plethora of other musicians. What paradigm did the break down or create? They are just one of many fusion bands. Talent yes, changing the face of music, no.

If you really wanted to get down to it, without RUN DMC, 311 possibly would be missing a major element in their music.

I think I would put people like Rick Rubin, Afrika Bambata, and russel simmons ahead of any one hip hop group or artist. To talk about influential artists in hiphop, you'd have to go way back to the relatively obscure world of 70s black night clubs in the bronx. If I had to choose hip hop artists, I'd have to pick the beastie boys, and RUN DMC, though. They brought the sound to the mainstream, (for better or for worse, as DD said)

eric clapton...jimmy page...jim morrison...bob dylan...someone already mentioned lennon....paul mCcartney....there were a lot of jazz people that i dotn know names of

Les Paul - Pioneered the solid body electric guitar - with out him there would be no rock and roll of any kind
