Parents snap up drug-test kits
By RACHAEL HODDER
20jan01
ONE in three ecstasy-testing kits sold at a Fitzroy bookshop are bought by parents for their teenagers.
Parents buy the kits to pass on a "safe rave" message to their youngsters.
Polyester Books manager Paul Elliott said the $22.95 kits were popular and sold to a wide range of people, including many parents.
He said it was similar to the safe sex message that most parents passed on to their children as a precautionary measure.
Mr Elliott said he assumed the parents thought the kits would help if their children were experimenting with drugs.
"You can't use them in a club. You've got to wear rubber gloves when you do the testing," he said.
Mr Elliott said another testing kit would soon hit the market to cover other lesser-known drugs.
The legal ecstasy testing kits show the presence of the drug's active ingredient, known as MDMA, but not its strength or the presence of other chemicals. Mr Elliott said other coun tries had government-sanctioned testing of illicit drugs.
"In other countries they have laboratories where you can test pills. It is more thorough and scientific," he said.
"If the government is concerned about people hurting themselves that's what they should be doing."

nods, however that statistic actually suprises me. is it parents buying testers or older people who want to recreationally use mdma and dont look like ravers (and look more like parents)? interesting none the less, regardless of how it stands at least a positive message is emerging from all this.

homer putting on funny voice "hello, my names Mr. Burns. I believe you have a letter for me"
postman "No problem Mr. Burns. And what was your first name?"
homer "I dont know"
adults are going ad buying these kits, saying they are for their kids (what wonderful parents. yeah right!) so they dont get caught. Maybe they are paranoid about shop owners dobbing them in?? Maybe I'M being paranoid. But I doubt it. I have VERY open parents and there is no way they would buy me a tester!

My folks have always supported me being experimental (which is cool 'cause my dad's a GP) as long as I educate myself as to what the risks are and I'm careful when I do whatever I do.
But there is no way they'd ever buy me a testing kit either. But then I don't know whether they know I go to raves/parties/whateva as I moved out 4 years ago.

maybe mr elliot is falling into the "see that old bloke...he's an under-cover" trap.
this line gets its regular outing whenever anyone not dressed like a traffic warning signal and over the age of 25 goes to a club.
perhaps Ms Hodder who wrote this story should contemplate that older folk use xtc ...what sprt of shock horror would that provoke

yah.. my mom's a good bit over 40. her and my dad go to outdoor parties (e/core, green ant etc)
they know that we take e, speed, meth, acid, G etc, they've seen us on it. they know all about our test stall and keep on it w/ interest.
also, my mom's done nearly all of the above

My friend's dad (who's 50) gave him for his birthday, 2 white mitsi's from March and two trips.
happy b'day son!
Old people get chopped... it depends on what you use MDMA for. If it's to just get fucking messy while out, and never used for personal growth or anything more, than yes i can see it growing old.
otherwise, i can easily see 50-yo pill monsters.

i think you hit it exactly there supaspeed...what we have here is a fantastic substance for personal growth which has no age or cultural boundaries. its use as a recreational drug (whilst very pleasant) is IMHO not doing it any favours.
great to hear that there are some cool parents out there. personally my dad has had his fair share of experimentation and is very open minded - but he's dutch so hey

as regards 'good press'...well yeah but don't we want accurate press. A 100 'positive' xtc stories could be published but if they weren't accurate it would just be someone else's propaganda. The media will swap sides and tell lies without hesitation if it sells.
