Hey, I hope this is a place I can find some sort of help. I speak to doctors and they look at me like I am crazy, wanting more meds or simply tolerence issue.

I take my Oxycontin orally. I chew it up. I am having a problem where 1 week they are working fine no issue at all. Take the meds 20 - 40mins later they are in effect. Sadly the next week I take the medication and I can wait up to 3 hours (mostly 2hours) before they work. Of course because it has taken a long time for it to come in effect, it has lost a big portion of its substance. This can go on for many weeks, before waking up and boom! it knocks me for 6. Almost like I have taken too much. For the next couple of days I need to be careful with my doses because it seems like too much. Than as suddenly as it changed, it changes back.

Please note during the periods the meds are not working correctly, there is no dose that will. If I were too up my dose it would not change things.

I have a back injury I am working through. At first I thought it was if I aggrovated it, that was the cause. Than I thought not enough water. Constipation. missing vitamins. Stressed out. You name it, I have tried it.

What is wrong with me??? I would like to cut back, but how can I work out any plan when I have no consistantcy

I suggest trying to take them as directed, without trying to break the release mechanism, and see if you get better results. If your Rx dose is not high enough for your level of pain, or if you need breakthrough medication, the best thing for you to do is to talk to your doctor about it.

It sounds like there is some serious inconsistency in the functionality of the release mechanism due to your chewing them.

Thank you for your reply. It is worth a try. Please note: I am honest with my doctor in all aspects.

Good news is that, Doctors will be deadening some nerves in my back to eliminate some pain. However than to get off the Oxycontin I will require some consistancy. Right now it is very very fustrating.

I can only imagine the unnecessary suffering and frustration you are going through.

Keep us updated, and we'll see if we can be of further assistance.

Radio-frequency nerve ablation, by chance?

Had it done at 2 spinal facet joints. helped a little for maybe 3 months. but it eventually came roaring back. hope you have a better result.

also, i agree with the chewing...also, that med is best used in conjunction with a breakthru med as mentioned... do you not have a BT med?

Sounds like your having a negative reaction to the time release mechanism.

1) Stop chewing your pills

2) Consult your doctor about the time release issue, you are NOT the only person to complain about OxyContin's time release mechanism, ever since they (and many other Big Pharma companies making narcotics) switched to using time release mechanisms that are designed more to deter abuse than to provide adequate lasting analgesia to legitimate patients.

Exactly tricomb,...I would think anybody that was prescribed the original OC's then switched to the new tamper resistant (OP's)? would wonder what happened to the adequate analgesia.

If it is the "oxycontin pebble" it probably has something to do with more than one or two tablets gelling to absorption at about the same time (feeling like too much) or even shitting them out before they even start breaking down (feeling no pain relief)...
The latter, which was the case for me.

With some doctors, it doesnt matter how honest you are, they are just plain dumb & dont care what you have to say. They figure they are doing you a favor by giving you these plastic OP's & its a big deal. Ask if you can switch to oxycodone 15 or 30's & add a possible breakthrough pain med like 10/325 norcos............good luck!
