I was prescribed Oxycontin 80mg for bad back pain after a blast injury in Afghanistan. Even though it got rid of my pain, the dose had to be increased. One night my wife took a picture of me to show me just how bad i looked when i was on them. I looked like a complete bag head (smack head for anyone outside the UK) the next day i was sat in the bath in tears and i sent her a message saying throw them all in the bin and make sure they were crushed. Well...............what followed i was not warned about at all. Pure hell from the withdrawals. Day one i spent vomiting on and off all day with restless leg that i just can not describe. Sleep.....no chance, i tried 10mg Diazepam but still no sleep. Day 2 was even worse, i honestly felt like i was dying and im not exagerating. Again no sleep with constant cramping and turning in my stomach. This went on for 7-10 days before the insomnia/sickness/restless leg subsided. Three weeks on now and im still very lethargic, but im by far past the worst. Why am i posting........this is one nasty drug......luckily i have a very caring/loyal wife that helped me and i do have a lot of will power. I urge anyone even thinking of trying this (and from what i have since read is that people take this for a recreational drug??) please please please please do NOT touch this stuff with a barge pole. It does beg the question why these types of medication are created, surely there must be other ways of creating pain relief than this.....smells of corporate greed by creating addictive drugs.

You'd be surprised how difficult it is to treat pain, and why drugs like oxycodone have incredible therapeutic value when taken as directed under the supervision of a competent physician.

You wouldn't have experienced such bad withdrawals if you had discontinued the medication properly. I'm going to close this now because there's no harm to be reduced, but yeah, this is further proof that opioids are incredibly powerful drugs that can be destructive if not used with extreme caution, and their use should be reevaluated periodically when used long-term.

@OP, had you asked your doctor to taper you down, you could have avoided opioid withdrawal. I'm sure your doctor was not happy to hear you abruptly discontinued the medication like that.
