okay, i've never had the opportunity to smoke REAL opium before. recently i thought i had lucked out, finding something that appeared black at first glace, but after later inspection found it to have a red tinge to it and it was a very hard, brittle substance. i decided to smoke it anyway, and did not get a rush, and concluded that it wasn't real.
about a year or so ago, i ran into an antiques store that specialized in old medicine bottles (mostly from the 1920's-1940's) and ran across several that caught my eye. I didn't have much cash on hand at the time, so I bought 3 bottles, one was morphine (dated 1927 I believe) and two bottles of cough syrup. The two bottles of cough syrup (according to the label) are 60% opium, and the rest alcohol and a few other herbs and various ingredients. I bought these mainly out of nostalgia, finding it interesting there was a point in time in our country's history that opium and morphine were readily available over the counter. Upon looking inside of the the cough syrup bottles I noticed there was about 1 inch of a black tar-like substance on the bottom. At first, I contemplated trying to scrape it and smoke it. My judgment got the better of me, and I decided smoking an unknown substance that is at least 60 years old to be a very bad idea. I still highly doubt that I will actually scrape the substance from the bottom of the bottle, but I'm curious nonetheless.
I would imagine that being organic material it would break down over time, and not to mention whatever else is in this concoction, rendering any opium left worthless.
Does anyone have any information on the shelf-life of opium or morphine? (Note: I'm not actually going to try and inject whatevers left of the morphine bottle, that would be stupid.. but I've put worse things in my lungs before than the black sludge in the bottom of the syrup bottle). What also has me worried is the quality and purity of substances used as medicine during this time period.
Any thoughts or ideas?
