Hello, I am a long time lurker, I've been around for 3 or 4 years now, but I am concerned about the safety of opiates/opiods. Specifically Oxycodone.

I have searched and asked around and have gotten mixed opinions. I am wondering how easy is it to OD on Oxycodone, lethal or not. Some of my friends seem to believe if you take an opiate you will die in your sleep, while others think it relatively safe, I've dabbled a few times this year, around 3 or 4 times, and I think I want to give it a go after thanksgiving break, but I am afraid of the possibility of death, how common is it?

I get scared to sleep at night when I take them even though I am not that high, as I don't take any more a few hours before bed. but the fear really takes away from the relaxation. I don't dose huge, I'm thinking maybe 20-30mg throughout the afternoon and night. I am opiate naive this will be my second real experience with opiates and the last time was months ago.

thank you for any insight. :)

Do remember: Opium and other opioids used to be used as hypnotics. They are not exactly lethal killers when used alone, and in reasonable doses. If you start getting reckless with dosing, or mixing with e.g. alcohol/benzos, the safety factor goes down a lot.

For most people, oxycodone will probably make you sick before it makes you stop breathing.

By the way, if you have taken opioids before, you're no longer opioid naive.

It is relatively easy to OD on opiates/opioids...period. That being said it really depends on your tolerance, how much you dose and how safely you go about it. Your friends are very uneducated about them if they say that you cannot go to sleep and die/quit breathing while asleep.there are some things you can do though to make certain that you do not die from taking oxycodone..or other pharmaceutical opiates/opioids.

Knowing that you have a very low tolerance, just be sure you never overdo it. You said you have taken 20 to 30 mg of oxy before? That is ok for being opiate naive...but I really would not go any higher than that. This where people make a big mistake..know your limits..and the key (rule) is to alwaysstart low, go slow. Start at a dose that you know is safe..take it, wait 45 mins to an hour..if not where you want to be, then take 5 to 10mg more (no more than that each time). Wait another 45 mins for it to kick in. If you become overly medicated then don't keep going. Signs can include nausea/vomiting (some people experience this even in small doses), unable to stay awake, cold, clammy skin, slowed/decreased respirations.

The thing is if you feel ok and not experiencing the above symptoms, you aren't going to go to sleep and just die as long as it has been long enough for it to fully kick in. Don't take a dose and then go right to sleep. The reason people usually die from taking opiates/opioids is they stop breathing/respirations become depressed or they become unconscious, vomit and then choke on it. People can also become very ill if they become unconscious and lie in one position for a long period of time causing muscles to break down..it causes injuries to your body and cause kidney damage among other things.

Also, just keep in mind it is always easier to OD when taking anything by IV. Stay away from stronger drugs such as fentanyl especially. Other than that, the same rules apply with stronger narcotics.

The other BIG thing to remember, don't mix opiates/opioids, especially with alcohol and benzos.

Be safe..let know if you have any questions!

3% of herion users die from oding. If youre using a small amount & youre not mixing it w any other substance, its relitilvly safe. Just dont overdo it...do like 20 or 30mgs.

Thanks for the replies guys, this will help keep my mind at ease, I feel as though I will be safe

^oh yeah, they are a little too good. If your a poor bastard (like I was in HS and college) then its not such an issue cause its hard to sustain anything near a dependence risking habit. But once I got into the working world, save thousands up and could dabble a few times a week without any real financial issues, it quickly went down hill. I was soon using all my money and all day everyday,

the risk of addiction doesn't really worry me too much, I am confident that I will only dabble every few months, I mean I've had this OC 80 now since the summer, I just had no free time to do it, my girlfriend and university take up too much of my time. the only worry I have is death.

Don't underestimate addiction. Heroin made me spend $1500 in a short month. I work minimum wage that was all I had saved up in a couple years.

So has said every other opiate addict in existence in the beginning..

I understand that every addict thinks they are different than the rest and they won't get addicted, but I'm different ;)

another question I have is when will it be safe to drink again? if I want to get drunk 3 days later will I be at risk of synergistic effects of mixing these drugs?

But I'm different  haha that's cute, you've been warned...

You could drink the day after you did dope.

I was being sarcastic, but why is it that you can drink the day after? the time I did oxy I seemed to be high for a quite a while, I even felt good the morning after.

It's safest to not consume any alcohol until after you have stopped feeling the effects of the drug. 12 hours, 24 hours, whatever it is for you personally. There are a lot of factors at play such as: The drug itself you are using and it's half-life, individual body chemistry, metabolism, etc.

20 -30mg, all other things being equal, you're good. Paying attention to how you feel is key, at that range i would expect only someone who weighs about 75lbs. on an empty stomach to feel anything close to 'ohshitididtoomuchamigonnaod?'.

Main worry should be itching.
Up to 9% of opioid users are either killed or severley mutilated by their own itching.

Take a bath in hydrocortisone cream and pop some benadryl or phenergan. Works like a charm. Be careful not to nod out and drown in the cortisol ointment.

But seriously just research the living shit outta drugs before you take them....any drug.

Huge pet peeve of mine when people blindly believe what their 'friends' say and take drugs without reading so much as the Wikipedia stub or watching a short documentary.

Go on pubmed and search oxycodone doseages.

There are all kinda factors that come in to play.
Take me for instance; sporadically uses opiates for 3 years. Use inclines, as does tolerance. In December 2010 2 10mg hydrocodone tablets did the trick.
October 2013 and I need twice that much to get some pain relief and feel ok.
Today I only took 40mg at once, and that was because I went all morning without any...sweated my add off so that I can have a 40mg reward in the evening

Oh and when I take enough to get 'high' I'm sometimes scared ill die in my sleep.

Not officially diagnosed but pretty sure I have sleep apnea.

So kid, if your before this point, stay with weed.

I have a pipe dream of replacing all my narcs with weed..I would probably have to grow the shit or something which is quite impractical atm.

Thats what i thought too... Do not underestimate opiates. You'll hate yourself and regret that mistake for the rest of your life. As for the OD'ing i personally know I did to much when i have uncontrollable vomiting.
