Are there any nootropics people know exists that helps with short term depression? I've tried phenibut (nootropic that helps anxiety) and was pretty impressed by it. Maybe there's some nootropics I have no idea exists that would probably alleviate some problems I have that encourages me to abuse substances for this very same problem.

Could you describe your symptoms in a little more detail? i’m no psychiatrist or professional, just a blind guy with an interest in neuropharmacology? due to my blindness, I often make spelling/typing errors so please forgive me if you see them. i’ve suffered from anxiety, chronic fatigue and extreme distractibility, as well as extremely low motivation all my life and I’m very sensitive to stress. i’ve become considerably less resilient to stress over the past year and actually experienced a few months of what I believe to be severe anhedonia(Lack of will to pursue pleasure). for me, I don’t believe traditional cholinergic nootropics like pirasatam and it’s analogues would be very beneficial, and actually they could be counter-productive as they can increase depression susceptibility. this makes sense as excessive cholinergic signalling is known to be involved in depression. likewise, I would advise you to be very careful with these drugs. personally, I feel that I could benefit immensely from a dopaminergic antidepressant like bupropion or even better, selegiline. By short-term depression is this something you have just started to experience or is it something recurring? which drugs of abuse appeal to you when you are depressed? finally, do you know of any triggers that brought on your depression?

if your symptoms are like mine, maybe you would benefit immensely from Selegiline. please check out the Erowid websites for experience reports on this substance, it seems very promising. Also, feel free to check out my thread on Selegiline, here’s a link to it

e

This is a nootropic? Gonna look into it, thanks. My depression has been severe lately even though I've made a lot of progress on my life more than in a long time. I am beginning to recognize that maybe it wouldn't hurt trying miscellaneous things not hardcore narcotics lol.

What dose of selegiline do you take? I have some old stuff that is past it's expiry date but it might still be good. I remember it's very potent though.

Thank you for this info. I just started getting into nootropics and have chronic fatigue syndrome and depression/anxiety and tried piracetam and noopept and noopept made me feel very depressed. Phenibut is nice but too addictive and leaves you too down the following days. Following this post. I hope you find something.

Unfortunately, I don’t yet take anything. i’m not yet financially independent and my Family don’t really believe in ADHD/depression or at least they see them as a more modern phenomenon. once I become financially independent, i’m planning on trying moderate to high dose Selegiline administered sublingually to lift my mood and restore my energy.

You’re welcome. As I’ve said in many of my other posts, I feel I wrongly believed my cognition/Memory were impaired for most of my life but after doing some intensive self reflection, I realised my cognition and intelligence were average but my motivation and resilience were severely impaired. This is perhaps why I’ve always procrastinated so much and seriously struggled with long-term planning/commitment.
Selegiline is not really a nootropic, rather, it is a powerful dopaminergic medication which acts more like a mental energiser rather than memory enhancer. this seems perfect for me and might be just what you need as well, if you feel that a sense of laziness or fatigue is the main factor holding you back.
Recently, I’ve been very wary of True cognitive enhancers due to their propensity to cause depressive behaviour or increase depression susceptibility.
If you can get hold of Selegiline, I would advise you avoid all other psychoactive drugs to reduce the risk of uncomfortable or dangerous interactions, but also to help you determine how much and how exactly the Selegiline is helping you

Good luck with it but I wouldn't take high dose of Selegiline. Start with a very low dose as it has interactions with food and can cause problems in high doses. Just a heads up to research it well first. I hope it helps though and you can try it soon.

Thank you. I remember you saying you’ve tried selegiline or you have some with you currently but it has expired? if you do have any experience with it, please could you let me know what it’s like. i’ve got a few great answers on the thread I created and a small number of positive anecdotes from Reddit and Erowid but the more personal experiences I hear of, the better.
Also, thank you for your concern, but by high doses I mean something like 10 mg sublingual and maybe orally if that works well. as I’ve said before, I’m fully aware that at these doses, selegiline loses any of its longevity/Life extending properties, and some suggest it may even very slightly accelerate the aging process. however, these are the doses needed for the strong dopaminergic effects. regarding food and drug interactions, I don’t actually like any of the foods that are contraindicated with MAOIs and I don’t use any serotonergic medication either. of course, I will start low and slowly escalate the dose until I feel optimum benefits.

has anyone tried nsi-189

i've got 10 grams coming from china, so i'll report back after a trial of 30 days, 40mg a day

its supposed to create neurogenesis in the brain and there are some interesting anectodal reports about it online.

Good luck with it and I look forward to hearing how it works for you. Please be safe when using it.

From memory it really hypes you up a lot and is an upper in some way. I wouldn't say it's euphoric or anything though. I remember I got it as I wanted an MAOi for something else I was taking at that time. I'm pretty sure it's something like 10 years past it's expiry but I kept it for some reason. They are 5mg and you really only need like a half of a tablet every second day or less. I wouldn't take 10mg of it or you might have a bad reaction. I wish you luck with it. Sorry I can't give more of a review of it but it's been so long since I tried it and it's a pretty full-on medication with effects.

The other thing I wanted to ask about for dopamine was sifrol as I have a current prescription for that and have it. I'm not taking it while I'm experimenting with the nootropics though in case they affect dopamine which I think some might. Also I think there's different dopamine receptors like how there's different GABA ones but I don't know much about it. I know it's a Parkinsons' medication (I take it for restless legs) and have heard it can have the effect of making people do compulsive things like gambling and sex addiction, etc. I know when I took it it can make me horny sometimes lol. Sorry if that's TMI. Not in a way or too much to make me do anything about it besides take care of business myself.

I think it has promising implications in the medical field but I’ve heard it was rather disappointing in human trials for depression. this is because, although neurogenesis is associated with the antidepressant response, it may well have been a coincidence. this is because the pro survival and Growth signalling pathways like Pi3K/AKT and MAPK which promote neurogenesis in the long term, can also trigger immediate changes to receptor expression on the surface of neurons. it is very likely that altered expression and function of AMPA glutamate receptors, rather than neurogenesis is actually responsible for the antidepressant affects. there are stories that say otherwise, but it may be that in some circumstances neurogenesis can be beneficial.

A major problem with stimulating neurogenesis as a therapeutic strategy, whether for cognitive enhancement or depression treatment, is that The new neurons are never incorporated into Brain circuits and may simply die off. furthermore, stimulating neurogenesis with small molecules or Growth factors commonly increases the number of neuronal stem cells as opposed to fully grown functioning neurons. when I first learned about this, it sounded quite gloomy but actually, there’s a good reason for it. adding more neurons to specialised brain circuits could lead to serious imbalances and it should be noted that excess neurons and decreased pruning of synaptic connections are involved in serious autism Spectrum disorders.

Thanks for that. Sifrol is a brand name for the Parkinson’s disease medication pramipexole, a D2 and D3 dopamine agonist. it is used for RLS and is now being considered as an augmentation agent for major depression. regarding dopamine receptors, yes, there are many subtypes but the D1, D2 and to a lesser extent, the D3 receptors are most important when it comes to mood regulation and psychoactive drug affects. compulsive behaviour including hypersexuality are linked to D2 receptor activation. this is why Parkinson’s disease drugs including pramipexole have been used off label for treating sexual dysfunction.

On the topic of selegiline, it has also been shown to cause hypersexuality in some Parkinsons patience and has been used by some older people to increase their libido. as I mentioned in my selegiline thread, i’ve become considerably less resilient to stress and each time I experience a stressful event, The longer my depressive symptoms and negative mood/Anxiety persist afterwards. I also suffered a few months of severe anhedonia at which point, my libido dropped to 0 despite being extremely high my entire life. thankfully, I’ve recovered from that, but I’m hoping that Selegiline will treat my lifelong chronic fatigue and extreme laziness/procrastination as well as make me more resilient to stress.

Thank you again. You are very knowledgeable about this topic. Sorry you have depression. I also have it and chronic fatigue syndrome. I hope we both find something that helps very soon. Phenibut is some relief when I'm on it but the days afterward are challenging.

You’re welcome and thanks very much for your kind words. I certainly hope we both find something that works well for us.
