Nitrous Oxide used through a 'Whipped Cream Dispenser' - Health

I did a search but couldn't find the info for this.

I was just having some nangs (nitrous oxide cartridges) through my whipped cream dispenser which I've had for probably a year and a half now, maybe longer.

Over time I've noticed a black residue will start building up inside the dispenser to the point a small amount of black gooey liquid is pooling at the base of it. I clean it occasionally, but with the amount of nangs that go through it (I share it amongst friends often) the black residue always starts building up again and eventually liquefying into this black gooey substance. The inside walls of the dispenser are coated in a fine layer of this black residue which it appears to look like it has been sprayed into the dispenser.

Now, obviously the build up is something being released each time a nang is twisted and released into the dispenser. I use food grade n2o chargers, the same brand every time. On the side of the box it says that the only contents of the chargers are 8g of pure n2o.

So I'm assuming that the black residue build up is something to do with the small hole sealed by a metallic looking material that is pierced each time a nang is put through the dispenser. Either that, or less likely I'm thinking it could be a residue from the nitrous oxide itself.

tl;dr - Basically, does anyone know what this black filth is? and more importantly is it harmful to your health/lungs if some of it is being inhaled when your taking lungfulls of nitrous? If it actually leaves the inside of the dispenser in the first place, which I have a feeling it does. Anyone know?

IIRC it's a lubricating oil that is present in especially the cheaper brands of charger; designed to keep the machine's operation smooth - Which would normally be harmlessly dissipated in the mass of cream, if it was used as designed. But when inhaled without any medium between gas and user it tends to build up in the canister and undoubtably our lungs.

Thanks for the info. The part I've highlighted is what I'm curious about, is there potential for long-term damage from prolonged use? Or is it no more worrying then smoking a cigarette or some weed etc if that puts it in some perspective?

It's just that when I unscrew the top of the dispenser off and look inside after heavy use, what I see just does not look healthy at all. It has a nasty smell too.

I've felt no negative physical effects yet and have used them quite a bit over the years, I was just curious as to whether there could be any long-term ramifications as the gooey black filth doesn't look like something your lungs would want in them.

i assume he is trying to get bluelight status :\ either way this site is for harm reduction and i have a feeling if you keep up the useless posts you might get banished from this place :p

My mates usually get hot water and let the bulb machine "whipped cream dispenser" soak in for an hour or so then we re use. Either way its not good for your health in big doses. :|

ive had my fair share of nang headaches after a good binge, a good friend of mine has the same dispenser as your talking about and i have noticed what your talking about, definately not in any large quantities though...

i assume the health risks would be negligible...

Use a balloon as a "filter" mechanism. You will hardly notice any oil even after a night of fiending so I don't think as much oil is in the gas as you fear.

loads of nangs go thru those machines, and the oil is a cunt to get out well... the oil sticks to the sides... placing some kind of filter in your mouthpiece would be the best option

Good reply. It also contains a mild anti-biotic, but they won't disclose what it is.

Another thing, if you put a nice new cream whipper in hot water you will destroy the finish on the outside of the bottle. Use warm water and an anti-bacterial cleaner.

You can buy filters that screw on to the bottle before you put the nang in as well but they are hard to get into Australia. Easiest way is to put some absorbent paper in the nozzle if it is a whipper and with a little more difficulty the spout on a soda syphon.

The cheaper brands have a lot more machine oil in them too and the 16g chargers are the worst of the lot. I swear they are not meant for human consumption.

No. The amounts each charger contain would be tiny. If your going through a carton, (360 chargers), a day though it's probably a different story.

Haha, didn't think so. ;)

Well the chest infection is only remnants that has been there for around 3 weeks.
Maybe I need a carton of nangs, for medical reasons of course

speaking of medical reasons, I guess the supreme solution is to head onto medical grade n2o, which is easier dreamt about than done ;)

one is rather annoyed that those charges contain unlisted ingredients.

Thanks for the replies all, I think I'll start using a filter like you've suggested. The balloon idea sounds good, probably would be more efficient in terms of inhaling the desired amount of nitrous in one go too I'm assuming.

Doesn't sound like the amount of oil that may be inhaled would be causing much damage anyway as it would be such a miniscule amount.

I'm just hoping the miniscule amount of oil inhaled isn't something your lungs are unable to clean themselves of. I know the lungs can clean themselves of tar buildup from smoking if you simply stop smoking so I hope it's the same for the oil residue from n2o use. I guess we'd know about this by now or heard of people suffering from lung problems from nitrous if it were the case.

I've got some peace of mind now (health-wise) when I see that black gooey, oily residue in the dispenser each time I open it up to clean it.

Medical grade would be great if it were available to the public. This food grade brand, I'm probably not allowed to say the actual brand but I'm sure it's the one most of you would recognise and use does say in bold letters on the side of the box "Do not use for any other purpose! Do not inhale! Misuse can be physically harmful and dangerous to your health." But I'm assuming thats more talking about the dangers regarding people passing out from lack of oxygen when inhaling constantly without taking a quick breath of air or just for liability purposes in general.

Happy nanging all :)
