Nightmare Alley (2021)

Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro.

This film is a remake of the same name from 1947, starring Tyrone Power (who claimed it was his favorite). Both are adaptations of the novel Nightmare Alley by William Lindsay Gresham, published in 1946.

This newer version looks interesting; I haven't seen many of del Toro's recent efforts, but I'm generally a fan.

Starring:
Bradley Cooper
Cate Blanchett
Toni Collette
Willem Dafoe
Richard Jenkins
Rooney Mara
Ron Perlman
Mary Steenburgen
David Strathairn

Plot:
An ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is.

Anyone see this yet? I'm thinking of going to an early bird special this morning and gettin' tipsy while I watch it.

I've never really been that impressed by del Toro's work tbh. He's one of those guys who has good influences but his own stuff is just meh imo

dude, you know something is good when you hop on Bluelight, scroll down to F&TV just so you can start a thread about (but this guy @Mysterier --> :madlaugh: <--(me) beat me to it!
great show!

I never got around to seeing it :( They had a black and white limited run of it but the day I planned to go, the roads iced over and our cars don't have AWD so... missed out. Guess I'll have to rent it.

I thought it was excellent. It was an engrossing, richly-drawn world and story that didn't feel derivative like other neo-noir thrillers lately.

Cate Blanchett is a marvel, and Willem Dafoe is great as usual.

^ same. Love the fact he honours a story; homage stories/fables/allegories, (whether sophisticated or, basic; old tales from cultural, yore). 🙂
