Ive recently started smoking again after being quit for almost 2 years(yes im an idiot flame away). I am currently on 2 mg's of clonazepam a day and i was wondering does nicotine have a negative effect on clonazepam?

A doctor told me once that heavy smoking can shorten the effects of clonazepam, but at the time i thought he was just trying to get me to stop smoking. But i think i read somewhere before that there might be some truth to it, i just cant remember where.

Any help on clearing this matter up would be appreciated. Thanks.

ive read the same thing somewhere that nicotine speeds up the metabolizm of benzos, not sure how it does so though

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have another question though and i dont feel like clogging up the message board by making another thread.

Im gonna try to quit smoking soon and im thinking about trying bupropion. I am on amitriptyline as well as clonazepam and i would like to know if there is any interaction there. I know both amitriptyline and bupropion block the reuptake of norepinephrine so i guess that could be bad. I am now on 150mg of amitriptyline a night.

Also would the stimulating affects of bupropion make the clonazepam work less effectively?

What is the amitrip for? Just for sleep?

Mixing Bupropion and amitrip isn't the greatest idea, but it's not a direct interaction... the evidence is that it's not really any better than using nicotine patches

Well i take the amitriptyline mainly for trigeminal neuralgia. Thats why i started taking it in the first place.

But it also helps my depression which gets pretty bad at times and has done wonders for my insomnia. I built up a tolerance to the sedating effects so thats why im at 150mg now. No other drug ive tried has even come close to helping my insomnia like amitriptyline.

I tried nicotine patches in the past and they made me hyper as fuck and didnt really help much. Neither did the nicotine gum. The last time i quit i went cold turkey but i was taking alot of opiates at the time and they helped alot.

Ive been off the smokes since yesterday but im having cravings that are driving me nuts. Ive been taking some codeine and that seems to help, but i still did about 200 pushups today i was so hyper.

Maybe i can manage cold turkey again though. Im just worried that if i take bupropion with the amitriptyline that it might cause a seizure or god knows what. Also i dont want the stimulating effects from the bupropion to cancel out the effects of the clonazepam.
