Teens arrested in $4m airport heroin seizure
August 30 2002
Two teenagers have been arrested at Melbourne Airport allegedly trying to import more than four kilograms of heroin on a flight from Malaysia.
Federal Justice Minister Chris Ellison said the exact weight and purity was yet to be determined, but the haul could represent about 16,000 hits with a street value of more than $4 million.
"The heroin was discovered (yesterday) when customs officers selected two passengers, who had arrived on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, for a baggage examination," Senator Ellison said.
"Although the examination of the passengers' bags revealed nothing . . . body searches followed, revealing packages containing the alleged heroin." The Australian Federal Police have charged a youth, 16, and a man, 18, both from Sydney, in relation to the importation and possession of a prohibited import.
Both appeared in court late yesterday, with the 16-year-old remanded to appear again on September 10 and the 18-year-old on November 20.
Senator Ellison said it was highly unusual for those arrested on drug importation charges to be so young.
"I am extremely concerned to learn of the allegation that a juvenile has been used to courier narcotic goods into Australia," Mr Ellison said.

"Although the examination of the passengers' bags revealed nothing . . . body searches followed, revealing packages containing the alleged heroin." -- Sounds like they were damn sure these guys had the gear. I wonder how frequently customs actually find drugs by chance, rather than acting on tip-offs from informants, or from huge importers giving away a couple of mules and a small package to draw attention away from the large shipment that comes in unnoticed.
