Injecting room trial to be extended
September 2, 2003

The NSW Government yesterday announced it would extend the trial of the Kings Cross heroin injecting room for another four years, reigniting debate on the facility's life-saving value.

Special Minister of State John Della Bosca said the Government would introduce laws in this parliamentary session to continue the trial until 2007. The legislation is almost certain to pass with Government backing and may receive support from some Opposition members, with leader John Brogden offering conditional approval.

The announcement follows the July release of a report that found 554 drug overdoses had been treated without a single fatality and there was no increase in drug-related crime or drug dealing in the area since the centre opened in May 2001. It found 13 deaths had been prevented.

Reigniting debate on the facility's life-saving value??

I was under the impression that the statistics with regard to overdoses, drug related crime and entries of rehab programs were very positive. Are there any solid stats from the trial report?
