44 held after sniffer dogs swoop
February 15, 2004

POLICE using sniffer dogs raided two events in Sydney overnight, arresting dozens of people and charging 10 with drug offences.

Officers targeted Sydney's Olympic Park, with raids on a concert at the Superdome and a dance party at the State Sports Centre.

Police said 44 people were arrested and 10 charged with various drug offences, including supplying a prohibited drug.

Those arrested for drug matters were granted bail and would appear in Burwood Local Court next month, a spokesman said.

Is it just me, or does this use of sniffer dogs represent a breach of some pretty basic human civil liberties?

Pity the sound system horns wouldn't operate in the 25-35kHz region, as an ultrasonic sweep generator could be fitted standard to every rig ;)

Perhaps we need a standard techno tune which is code for the presence of the witch hunters. As the DJ usually has the best view, this could be something for those at risk to consider. Perhaps a remake of that old KRS-ONE track "It's the sound of the police"...mmm...might be a we bit obvious :\

I don't wish to detract from the seriousness of these stories, but making light of the absurdity of these operations is somewhat important IMO. Besides, these unscrupulous people responsible for instigating these raids need to be exposed as the destructive party poopers they are :p

Well, two music events at olympic park in a row have been targeted by police and their drug dogs. On the surface, it looks like this might be common occurence for all of these future parties.

It's a damn shame. Was anyone their? Could you tell us if it was done to the same intensity as the other event their all but 3 weeks ago?

Well that's it kiddies.

Maybe time to think about if going to events and taking more than a couple pills is really worth the hassle, as well as a criminal record.

totally gay, I wouldn't want to ive in Sydney unless I was a REAL CRIMINAL commiting REAL CRIMES, in which case I would feel completely safe from cops who are too busy wasting time with shit like that

Heh, I cruised past the event at the State Sports Centre last night at about 10... There was a minibus full of police, 4 dogs, 2 patrol cars and 2 paddy wagons. I wasn't going to try to count the police...

Seems like an astounding waste of resources to me.

Wow, Sydney must be a great place to live!!!!

With all of your coppers busting kids at dance parties, I bet Sydney must'nt have any Murdurs, Rapes, Burglaries or assults!

As much as I can see the sensibility Bob Carr shows in some areas, he's essentially a right wing politician with very strong anti-drug views. I think it would take a lot to convince him of the virtues in a non-zero tolerance base drug policy.

Aside from the relevance of the Heroin Injecting Room, comparing NSW and Qld to Victoria atm; Victoria seems miles ahead in sensible HR directed reform. The concept of a National Standard Drug Policy seems lost amidst local government variations in regards to laws and support offered to HR groups. What's even worse is that the greatest variations in Health policy lie between Labor elected States 8(

Well I was at the party at the state sports centre last night, and I didn't see any sniffer dogs inside the venue, The only 2 that I saw was just outside as you lined up to go inside.
It will be safe to say that they will be dogs at *, they were at the event last year

I went to the Korn concert at the superdome last night and didn't see a single sniffer dog and only noticed about 2 police officers walking around all night. Security was searching everyone as they walked into the event though but i think that was more to do with things that could be used as weapons, etc...

I went to the event and didn't see any sniffer dogs inside either. They were outside but I still carried stuff in fine, although not alot.

my mate in syd and his friends got a tip off the afternoon that one of the big clubs there was raided. They didn't take anything in with them, but when they left he approximated 3-4 busses with around 50-70 cops involved.

I imagine it was a bit of a frenzy and he woulda been quite g'ed up so remember they are only approximations, but I'd believe them. If he got tipped off I assume many others did as well.

i see these sorts of raids as pretty pointless. although i dont speak from experience, i know people who use things to mask their scent from the dogs, and people who get their gear inside other ways. so the only people being caught are the users, and the stupid dealers.

hmn?

i went to both events at homebush last night.

at the superdome event, i saw a few cops around but no dogs, and the security that gave me the pat test opened up my wallet and checked every lil part of it(Are they allowed to do that?)

As i was walking to the event at the State Sports Centre, you could see the cops from a mile away, as stated above, there were that many vehicles, there were also people at the car park near the venue warning others about the sniffer dogs (thanks guys).

The was one dog walking up and down the line and another just before you entered the arena, that bastard got a bloke that was infront of us, well he sniffed his ass, dont know if it went any further than that.

I dare say this will definately being done at two tribes!!!

^They were at 2 tribes last year as well. If you are carrying your personal stash and hide it sufficently you will be fine. Just do the "I smoked a couple of cones before coming in tonight" line.

it's just so disgusting.. the waste of resources is hideous.. and for what gain?

Is it just because i've been paying more attention, or has the amount of raids and busts gone up heaps recently?

I went to the dance event and I was molested by dogs twice, although the first time they didn't have a good look because one bloke did a runner just as the dogs were heading towards me and all the cops screamed and jumped on him. I was fucking greatful for the distraction, and to the chick who knocked him over on purpose so the cops could get him I say a big fuck you.

The second time the dog was paraded around me and I could *see* and *hear* the fucker sniffing, but I had my gear well wrapped up in glad wrap and was fine.

What a fucking waste of resources. How many people were at the rave? Shitloads! All of them off their fucking tits, and how many people actually got busted? All they achieved was making a bunch of ravers shit their pants.
