Note: Not sure whether "Australian Drug Discussion", "Drugs In the Media" or here (Cannabis Discussion) is the best place for this article. Mods please move it if you think it would be better elsewhere.

Also note: Apologies if this has already been posted (it doesn't make sense to me that it hasn't been posted yet, but I DID UTFSE, so if it is posted elsewhere, let me know what search terms you used - perhaps it will help me learn what words to use in my future searches).

Pot addicts reclaim their lives
REPORTER: David Richardson
BROADCAST DATE: June 9, 20006

Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in Australia. Now a doctor is using a combination of three medicines to help addicts regain their lives.

According to recent figures, Australia is in the grip of a marijuana epidemic. While it is often considered a 'harmless' drug, marijuana addiction can have disastrous consequences.

More than 5.5 million people aged14 and over have smoked dope in their lives. And 1.8 million Australians, the same number of people as the population of Brisbane, have smoked in the past year - some as young as 12.

Julia Norcott was a marijuana addict, lighting up a joint every day.

"The more you have, the more you want," Julia said. "It's habit forming and it becomes part of your lifestyle."

The qualified nurse first tried marijuana in her late teens and became hooked on the drug in her 20s. As a medical professional, she should have known better, but could not shake it.

A $20 per day habit quickly became $50, then $100 eventually she lost everything: house, car, job. It seemed there was no way out of the mess.

"I think marijuana for the long term chronic user can be very similar to someone that is a heroin addict," Julia said.

Dr Jon Currie is the only neurologist in Australia specialising in drug and alcohol addiction. He has come up with an Australian first treatment for marijuana addiction and says it is working.

"We treat this as a medical problem," Dr Currie said. "You have diabetes, you have asthma, you have an addiction."

Dr Currie first formulated his radical ideas in Israel. In 1997, he accompanied Today Tonight to investigate a radical Israeli heroin treatment using rapid detox and the drug naltrexone, a drug that blocked the terrible effects of heroin.

Back in Australia, Dr Jon Currie found the same addictive problems with marijuana and the same problem with quitting.

"There's a physical addiction and people who try to stop get irritable, angry, depressed, aggressive," he said. "And they might want to punch people, walls, wives, bosses."

"So most people who try to stop find it very, very difficult."

Dr Currie's solution combines three drugs normally used to treat other diseases.

"One of the drugs is used for craving to stop alcohol," he said. "One of the drugs is an antidepressant and the other is a very clever use of a drug that is normally used for epilepsy."

Julia is one of 300 dope addicts now using this special treatment. So far, 200 have gone clean and stayed clean after six months.

"I can say it's actually changed my life," Julia said. "The quality of life for me has improved incredibly."

The treatment was said to cost $5 per day.

"By the time you finish, it's about $250 for the cost of the medicines," Dr Currie explained.

By comparison, addicts could spend about $300 per week on marijuana.

The government is currently funding Dr Currie's research, making the tablets free for people who want to kick marijuana.

But today, 300,000 Australians will light up, equivalent to the population of Hobart or Canberra. Many do not realise they are addicted.

Dr Currie said he would not be able to cure everyone.

"No, there is always going to be a proportion of people who will want to smoke, who will want to use drugs, or for whom it is just tooo difficult," Dr Currie said.

"The aim is to get 80 per cent of people able to stop, 20 per cent of people with a problem that we can then help in other ways."

If anyone knows any more about this, I'd LOVE to know what the three medications they are talking about are - I'm no longer a pot smoker, I don't need this, but am JUST SO DARN CURIOUS....

Is this even possible with weed? This has got to bee the biggest line of bullshit I've ever heard in my life. Next they'll bee saying women turning tricks for THC. They're talking like its crack or something.

Yeah, someone with a $100/day pot habit has got to be a pretty serious tool. I mean, I suppose its possible to buy a full-price quarter every day and smoke the whole thing (!)... but why not just grow a couple plants every few months if you are going live like that.

well... at least Australia is keeping its reputation as the most "down under" nation in the world.

Must be some shitty joint rolling happening down under

Shit, do they throw the weed in a pile, pour a little gas on it, light it, and sit at the other end of the room hoping to get high?

^exactly what i was wondering
$100 a day? she's getting ripped off

Maybe she just needed to smoke 20 plus joints a day. You know, like, one for every half hour of the day. To keep those demons at bay.

I've been to full blown weed addiction and it's not fun. I look back on it and frown. It really fucked my life up now I look back on it. Weed addiction kills motivation. You're just thinking about how to get your next quater. Hocking all your stuff for fuck all money and not being able to get it out before the three months is up.

$100 a day? It's possible. Normally I could survive off a AU$25 {AUD1 = USD0.75} deal a day (which was 1.7 grams), but most of that day would be hitching down to the pawn shop and loading some stuff then waiting for the dealer to drive up to my house. Then that 25er goes in about an hour. On dole day I would buy a half oz and that would be gone by the next morning, and that costs $150-$160. All of this weed was ofcourse hydroponic, and Australian weed is nearly always of high quality, a non-regular user would be pretty stoned and couch-locked from one bong rip from this stuff.

Also another problem Australian pot smokers have, and this is mostly the younger generations, is that the cannabis is almost always mixed with tobacco from cigarettes. It creates a faster hit, and makes it easier to pull big cones (bowls) through a bong all in one breath as the weed is pretty coated in harsh sticky cannabinoids. Also this leads to more addiction potential and more health issues.

I wonder if the drugs are Prozac and Valpro/Epelim... If so, Just go cold turkey. Go on a holiday somewhere for a bit, somerwhere with no hook up and have something to do. It's the boredom that keeps you addicted most of the time, which yes, does have physical effects but I wouldn't go as far to say cannabis is as physically addictive as heroin. When I came off it I had signs of psychosis but they're pretty much gone now.

Also 1.8 million doesn't sound like that much but we are a nation of only 17-19 million.

Honestly...if oyu think weed addiction is as bad as heroin, you really don't know a damned thing. Maybe you should TRY heroin or cocaine a few times before you spout such blatant drivel.

Marijuana smoking should be looked at as an activity. Not a hard drug or something. This way you can compare it to "immoral" activitys, porn, gambling, prostitution, alcohol, ciggerettes, you will see that all these things probably cause more problems then weed. So in the end, its nitpicking and hypocrites who love cocaine when partying.

I have about a 300 dollar a day weed habit but I am more productive than anyone I know while smoking more chronic than anyone I know. I go through about an ounce of krypto a day while I constantly roll joints and pack my phx bong, bowl, or vape and sit behind my computer working and making far more than 300 on most days. I also exercise daily and eat very healthy but I just love smokin chronic but there is no way this weed addiction is hurting my life.

Perhaps not your life, but it's definitely huring your wallet! 300 a day? roughly 108 000 dollars year? I have trouble believing you. You would have to be a millionaire to afford that. If it's true, you must be a large scale dealer or something.

If you ARE rich and buying off someone, that guy is basically making a living, possibly owning a large property and maintaining a family, solely thanks to YOU! You ARE their job.

Are you fucking me? They want to put you on antidepressants and epilepsy drugs?

"I used to smoke myself retarded every day, but then when I realized my life was a steaming pile without meaning, I decided to blame it all on weed! Now I'm on 3x the drugs and a complete zombie! Thanks doc!"

at $100 dollars a day, paying the worst price i can imagine, thats only 5g's... and that's REALY only five nice big joints... 1 before work, one at lunch, one after work, one after diner, and one before bed. Put this way I can understand a $100 habit... but $300!! Holy-crap man, at least get a better supplier and buy pounds!

oh wait, forgot that whole 'under a limit is just possession and not intent to distribute' thing... carry on.

Marijuana is not a drug. I used to suck dick for coke. Now that's an addiction.

You ever suck some dick for marijuana?
