New Pot-like Drug Appears in West Philadelphia
by KYW's Paul Kurtz
Philadelphia police say there's a new drug in town. They say it's a marijuana-like herb that comes from East Africa.
It's called khat.
"It's a green, leafy substance. It can be misconstrued to look like tea or some type of spice or something like that."
Inspector Aaron Horne (right) says a tipster led narcotics officers to a house in East Falls on Wednesday, where they found 17 large cardboard boxes containing 700 pounds of khat.
Horne says it was shipped from East Africa, where its use is commonplace:
"It's a cultural drug. And we recently noticed an increase in immigrants from Africa in this West Philadelphia neighborhood."
Horne says that khat can be smoked, chewed, or can be ground up into a paste. He says its effects are similar to cocaine.
It's relatively cheap, at about $150 a pound. And there is concern that this could the start of the next big thing in the drug trade.
No arrests have been made, but police were questioning some people of interest.
