so one of my close friends gets me something awesome every year. last year, she got me a gorgeous black leather briefcase. The year before that, she made a set of three matching collage/paintings and had them professionally framed. they are awesome. I always get her something, but it never ends up being anywhere near as cool as what she gets me. So this year, I want to get her something amazing. Like, holy shit, what an awesome idea. Sure, maybe a messageboard full of people who don't know her might not be the best place to start, but I'm coming up empty.

So here are the details:

1. ~$100, but this is flexible if the right thing comes up
2. nothing that could be interpreted as romantic (e.g. jewelery)
3. she's a very talented artist
4. she DRINKS. I don't want to get her booze though. I want something that she will keep.
5. she has recently been on a big dinner party throwing tip
6. i need to be able to fly with it
7. I have terrible taste in women's clothing.

anyone have any suggestions? ladies, did you get any REALLY good xmas gifts that might fit this description?

thanks!

If she drinks and is on a big dinner party kick a nice selection of bar glasses could be a good idea. Pair it up with a bottle of wine or something and I think it'd be a great gift.

good idea, and i was thinking something along those lines too. but as I said, I need to be able to fly with it and that might be a bit risky.

papasomni, that website is definitely on the right track too. haven't found anything yet, but right idea for sure.

A fish in a bowl.

You have a budget so make it a nice fish in a nice bowl with some pebbles and maybe a mini castle for the fish to swim around in.

I want to stay away from the one use things. she gets me stuff that I will have for the rest of my life (paintings, briefcase), and I would like to go with a similar theme.

I am reevaluating the glasses idea. I am thinking about hitting an antique store and picking up six totally different wine glasses if I can find six cool ones. I'm also thinking perhaps a set of antique serving utensils with napkin rings or something like that.

It is hard to make intimate thoughtful suggestions for someone I don't know.
I don't understand why people need strangers' advice on what to buy friends, family, or partners.

I suppose I can send you a fine silk scarf from here costing a fraction of what it would cost elsewhere if you can figure out how to send me the money. Apparently I have good taste. And I can definitely tell good silk apart from bad silk :).

Just thought I'd mention.

Buy her a special item she can use when entertaining. The crystal glasses idea is lovely, or you could look at a nice crystal decanter? Would she use a nice serving dish?

I think it would be sick if you got her one of those glass decanter things but got it decorated professsionally by a talented artist. That way you cover the love of art, the drinking part, and the dinner party part cuz she can pour her alcohol with class. Shit send me a check and Ill make you one lol. JK but on the real , no offense to anyone who has suggested it so far but i dont see any of these ideas being really "OMG, thats totally awesome" knock her off her feet type of thing, they are not very original. Like i said no offense to no one, i jus aint seein that 'amazing' factor that the OP is lookin for.

edit: COTB I didnt see that you posted that, Yea that is more along the lines of wat i was thinkin so props on that but the OP should make it special. I can think of plenty of ways to decorate somethin like that, that would be awesome and original. you want somethin that only she will have right. not some shit that she could just buy at the store. a one of a kind type of thing. I know if i was near you and could meet in person we could come up with some cool shit but I could still give you some ideas to tell someone else that you hired to do it if you wanted some help.

now this is what I am talking about. possibly a little outside my original price range, but this is the sort of thing I would be willing to spend a little more money on. I can't even begin to imagine where I would get something like this done in Ottawa though.

I've actually got a shitload of thai silks and pashmina and trinkets which I restock every time I go there to give away as gifts, but this situation calls for something a little more extravagant.

thx for the offer though brah ;)

Lacey took the jist of the words right out of my mouth. Your friend is an artist, she likes hosting dinner parties, and she likes drinking. You need to be searching for some sort of artistic wine glasses, shot glasses, serving platters, ice buckets, napkin rings, etc. The key is artistic and original here though - that is what will make it special.

Do a search for local glassblowers, ceramists (ceramics might save you a little cash over glass), or art colleges nearby. You can get reasonably priced, high quality work from students, or, as Lacey suggested, buy something unique and have it personalized by a local artist. Don't think you have to spend an arm and a leg though, I'm telling you - hit up the local talent.

Right, I forgot you come here often :). Can't wait to get you drunk next time you're here, *snicker*.
