Retired Never Was, Coulda been wannabe
Joe Pa?
St. Bobby?
Sorry, I grew up hating Bowden as a rival, and he's never been someone I could like. Respect? Not with all the violations his program has incurred...and is still incurring. For Penn State, they were always some cold weather northern team, so I didn't pay attention until Penn State beat my Gators in a bowl game (fair and square, no bitching). Even so, I've never been able to have a grudge against Joe Paterno other than he's too freakin' old and ought to give up the job.
Sorry, this isn't a rant on my part for or against either of them, but more a question of media coverage on something that has relative significance to the sport, but is only looked at in specifically chosen ways. Today's post is brought to you by the following post I read:
Bowden optimistic on future with FSU
Don't bother with the link, it's a usual fluff article. But for those not in the know, there has been media hype of how close these two dinosaurs are in terms of total wins, and how they each keep hanging on hoping to outlast the other and be the grand poobah of NCAAF wins. While the ruling referred to above is about players at FSU being given answers to tests, or having others take their tests for them (not just football, but several sports) - and the NCAA decision that among other things the football team must vacate 14 wins over that time frame based on inelligeble players....hence the effective end to this race.
On the plus side, maybe it will let them both gtfo of coaching. That alone is reason to hold them to it (yes, FSU has it under appeal, but it won't work).
But here's the crux of why I write. A few years back, the 'all time wins' for Bobby was allowed to include his time at Samford, a Division II school
Okay, so we break the rules and write new ones to get a winning and media popular coach up on that list of all time winners (how fitting that it's for FSU). So, without that rewritting of history, he'd be 31 wins short of where he is. But, okay, so we count wins at lesser schools....let's be fair about this, can we?
Not being mentioned in this senior citizen race is Eddie Robinson. Ever hear of him? Head coach at a predominately black college called Grambling University. Yeah, well, he managed to go 408–165–15 as a head football coach. Not Div 1-A, but if we're counting Samford....
There was a great hub-bub when Robinson retired, sensational fanfare about being football's winningest coach. But because it was at a black college...they don't even consider him part of this discussion? I don't think it's racism in that he's being ignored because he's a black coach. I do think it's being overlooked as he coached a black college, where the wins would be easier to get (yeah....right, see how many other coaches at that level amassed so many wins 8) ). But ultimately, he's out of the discussion because he's not currently active, and it's not exciting to talk about the race for 2nd place.
I can't get past giving Bowden those 31 wins and ignoring Robinsons 408 - and that isn't a reflection of hating FSU, that's being a football fan and knowing what's fair. Whether FSU vacates their 14 wins or not, I don't see him keeping pace with JoePa against the Big10 teams - PSU ought to have 6-8 wins a season, even a bad season. FSU is in the lower section of their conference these days, and it isn't getting better. By official count today, Bowden is 1 win behind JoePa, and that gap will only get bigger.
Will JoePa reach 408? Who is to say. That would mean he'd have to average only 7.5 wins over the next two seasons....very doable (provided he stays healthy...up in the press box). But when that happens, do they roll Eddie's name out again and say JoePa is a true winningest coach? Do they continue to ignore Robinson? This is just bullshit.
PS - fuck FSU.

...
With the glory days of the 1990s in the rear-view mirror and a ruling from an infractions committee looming about “vacating” 14 wins between 2006-07 stemming from an academic cheating scandal involving several FSU players, Bowden assured that he’s got more important things to worry about, like preparing his team for the fall.
Over the last couple seasons, Bowden has found himself neck and neck with Penn State coach Joe Paterno for the all-time wins record. As it stands now, Paterno has 383 wins, while Bowden has won 382. A ruling against Bowden would all but end the race between the coaching greats....
