napoxen effects on opiates?

Ive heard naproxen potentiates opiates a bit. Ive found some info, but very little on how exactly it works.

^ Agreed.. there is an addititive benefit in taking both in terms of analgesia, but naproxen has no recreational value and won't potentiate opioids at all as far as I know - it neither adds to the sedative effects (like benzos do) nor acts as a true potentiator (by affecting the metabolism of the drug via the CYP-450 enzymes, like cimetidine does).

Would you be able to share the info you have found?

I seen naproxen in many opiod potentiation guides but I have never seen any scientific evidence to support the idea that it increases bioavailability or psychoactivity. Some scientific literature on the subject would be great.

I will see if i can locate the info i read about this. It was a very detailed explanation, it simply said that naproxen adds to analgesia effect and also has an effect on the warm relaxing feeling of opiates. this may be total bs, i was just curious.

On a separate note, naproxen does potentiate gabapentin. I find that quite interesting.

Effie and SD are spot-on - the reason it has made it into potention guides and subsequently become junkie mythology is due to it's ability to increase the analgesic effects which, when discussed in medical literature, people misinterpret to mean it adds to the recreational value which it does not.

It's a great NSAID though!

how exactly does naproxen potentiate gabapentin?

According to many sites, even Pfizer's product monograph for gabapentin [here], naproxen supposedly increases the absorption of gapapentin, but none of these sites appear to list their sources. The actual studies appear contradictory. The following study says that all it does it add to the anagelsia by being an analgesic itself (the same as with opioids):

These data suggest that gabapentin + naproxen and pregabalin + naproxen can interact additively to reverse thermal hyperalgesia associated with peripheral inflammation. No combination of gabapentin + naproxen decreased edema in a manner greater than additive. Plasma concentrations of gabapentin and naproxen were unaltered by the addition of the other drug.

But another study, referring to gabapentin encarbil, a different drug which is a pro-drug for gabapentin, says:

When gabapentin enacarbil was co-administered with naproxen, gabapentin [peak serum levels] increased by, on average, 8% and [total bioavailability] by, on average, 13%. No gabapentin enacarbil dose adjustment is needed with co-administration of naproxen.

I have not been able to find any studies that say that gabapentin (as opposed to gabapentin encarbil) absorption is increased by taking it with naproxen but if Cloroxtastebad or anyone else knows of any I'd be interested in seeing them, as I'm curious as to why so many sites claim that it does.

Ill look for more info on naproxen and gabapentin.

It actually says on the Med guide that came with my gabapentin script that napeoxen interacts with gabapentin. It says, "Naproxen, in clinical trials, has been Shown to increase the bioavailability of neurotin by 12-15%. If an interaction is suspected talk to your prescribing doctor and adjust dose if necessary"

I will definitely say from mine own personal experience that naproxen makes the analgesic effects stronger, at the very least. And potentiates the other effects at the most. Idk about the 2nd because I was wicked fucked up 24/7 but it DEFINITELY made pain killing effects more pronounced/better.

Tums does as well but for different reasons involving stomach pH.
