The title says it all.
Some background on me:
I have rheumatoid arthritis + iron deficiency anemia
I'm 20 years old and about 113 pounds
I take iron
I just started medication that should be taking care of the anemia and arthritis, so
soon I will be gaining weight (because i'll be able to MOVE again, and i'll have an appetite!)
I'd say my stress levels are medium.

Why do you think my hair is falling out, and what can I do about it?

I've heard someone say (on this forum) that hair falling out is a sign one needs to gain more weight. What's the connection there?

In what pattern is it falling out? If you have bald spots popping up, there's a good chance you have Alopecia Areata. If that's the case, you can expect to have balds spots appear and disappear every few months. This normally goes away as you get older.

It's not falling out in spots, it's just generally falling out of my scalp. Like when I just give my hair a light comb, i'll get like 20 hairs stuck in the thing. That may not seem like a lot, but my hair is very easy to comb; it's just straight.

Hair falling out/thinning = often hypothyroidism. Though could be Adrenal (or a combo of both), or even potentially pituitary though not as common.

Do a google search for "temperature and pulse rate test thyroid" and you will find instructions on how to evaluate your thyroid. It tends to be more accurate then blood tests for several reasons.

Natural source B vitamins, lean protein, and magnesium will help. Nutritionally supporting blood sugar regulation and incorporating more raw foods into your diet is also helpful.

Do you have digestive conditions? Constipation? Get sick easily?

Try to find a Nutritionist or Naturopathic Doctor (whom would be able to run more intensive tests).

Because of your age it rules out a lot, though you have R. arthritis? Have you ever been tested for heavy metals? What about vitamin D3?

I'm 18, my hair started falling out in the typical MPB (male pattern balding) at 17. It receded a lil bit for a few months then stopped. But I understand it's very upsetting. The truth is though it's genetics...I've wasted 100's on all that shit and the only one I found too work somewhat was Biotin and Saw Pallmetto.

The Biotin strgnthens your hair, the Saw Pallmetto lowers your testostrone levels which converts too DHT, that attaches too your roots and makes your hair fall out. Just trust me when I say this though...theres almost nothing you can do except confirm that it is MPB from a doctor. If it ISNT then you have some hope...if it is, you just ogtta wait and see how far it'll go untill it stops...if it stops. If it dosent though you should still have another 15 - 20 years with your hair. ENJOY EVERYDAY! and tell your barber, my barber worked miracles with me, you can't even tell I have a receding hair line and I rock a very shot ceaser cut.

Best of luck, I know how much this is whack :(

This is NOT male pattern baldness. There is no receding hairline. Hair from all over the scalp is just falling out.

What medication are you on? My ex-girlfriend was diagnosed with lupus erythematosus, and had bad flare ups of arthritis from that. Her mother also had debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. My ex was taking prednisone for a few months, and her hair fell out as you described. I'm not sure if it was the medication or the lupus causing hair loss, although it has settled and she still has plenty of hair. Is it possible you have lupus? (I hope not)

I'd recommend loading up on the vitamins know to improve "hair, skin, & nails," especially vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids. I know these won't completely solve your problem, but they'll help. Start eating more walnuts and fish!

And if you want to gain weight, drink a tablespoon or two of extra virgin olive oil daily. I've heard that method used for recovering anorexics.

MANY pharmaceuticals can cause hair loss. Perhaps it's a side effect of your new medication? The body sheds hair when it's trying to eliminate toxins (such as a drug). Stress can also cause hair loss.

the Saw Pallmetto lowers your testostrone levels which converts too DHT

This is just plain wrong. Saw Pallmetto is a 5AR inhibitor. It reduces the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone- the alpha male hormone) which has been linked to MPB. However Saw Pallmetto has a strong affinity for the 5AR enzymes in the prostate with little impact on the enzymes in the scalp.

Minoxidil works pretty well for most people although only reduces vertex balding (the spot on the top of your head) rather than receding hairline. It works well for women also.

my hair is starting to thin, what the hell do i do

alright, i'm 19 years old and i've always kept my hair on the longer side.
everyone i know always says i have great hair, and the ladies have always loved it.
and basically, its a lot of my confidence, and i've noticed that my hair is thinning,
a lot, and when wet you can easily see my scalp.
I'm terribly afraid to loose my hair, but its in my genetics to loose it.
is there anything i can do, to keep my hair thick and to keep from loosing it?
and if anyone has tried anything that restored/kept their hair from balding, please share your feedback.

Well start studying propecia, zinc oxcide, DHT antagonists, etc There are quite a few forums on the web dedicated to this very topic. Just stick with things that have some evidence behind them, try to avoid overpaying, and remember that treatments for hair loss is a field that has been filled with a lot of fraud and exaggerated claims.

Hair treatments (like regaine) can work but normally means you have to take the medication for ever :0 - If its male pattern baldness and you dont want to take meds/have transplants/wear a hair piece (not a wig). Then the best bet is to get your shaver out and buzz cut it - nothing looks worse than a bald guy who tries to hide the spot with a combover or bufont etc.

I know I say this alot when replying in this thread but a visit to the GP cant hurt - some people lose hair due to stress, vitamin imbalance etc so get those ruled out first and then you know what exactly your dealing with.

I would disagree. I got frightened by the prospect of male pattern baldness a few years ago, ordered alot of propecia, and took it diligently for a year. 5 years later and the results are still there. For some you might need to take it forever, but for some, maybe not.

Cool - I thought that even with propecia you needed to continue taking it for as long as you wanted to retain your hair? These normally slow down / halt the hormore that is responsible for hair loss so my thinking was once you stop your body would automatically start producing the 'hair loss hormone' again.

My advice would be to just shave it off, thats what I did and I've never looked back.
