TL;DR = Just had my first OBE experience. The substances I was on before going to bed were weed, xanax, and melatonin. I was reading a very detailed erowid report about an OBE experience before I went to bed. When I tried to fall asleep, somewhere inbetween conscious and unconscious I ended up having several Out-of-Body Experiences in a row. Why did this happen? Questions at the end.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night I had my very first Out of Body experience of my life, or at least the first one I can remember having !! I'm trying to figure out what caused it. Here is the combination of substances that I took, and how close together in time, the first one being t = 0.
t = 0 : smoked some high quality White Rhino. Usually weed helps with my anxiety, but recently I've had more anxiety than usual because of an emotionally traumatic event (sudden death of family member 2 weeks ago). It seems I smoked just a tad too much and made my anxiety worse (maybe b/c it's part-sativa?).
t + 2hrs : I take (orally, no food in stomach) .5mg xanax, and snort another .5mg 30 minutes later so it kicks in at the same time as the oral one (this method of 1mg per night, half oral, half snorted is what works best since my trauma-related anxiety prevents me from sleeping)
t + 3.5 hrs : It's been 1 hour since I snorted the last dose of xanax. Normally I would be asleep by now, but my anxiety is worse than usual this night. So I take 6mg of melatonin (a non-drug supplement to facilitate sleep).
t + 4.5 hrs : It's been 1 hour since the melatonin, still can't sleep. So I snort just a quarter more (.25mg) of xanax (total of 1.25mg this night), and figure this should do it.
t + 5 hrs : It's now between 4-5 A.M. When the extra .25mg kicks in I get sleepy, and start to drift into sleep with eyes closed. This is when the OBE occurs!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The OBE experience:
I was laying in bed on my left side with a pillow between my knees like every night to prevent back pain. I had my left hand off to the side towards the edge of bed, and my right hand was tucked in-between my knees on top of the pillow.
The first thing I remember is my eyes were open, but my body felt weird, like 'buzzy' and semi-numb (kind of like a nod-level-dose of opiates, esp oxymorphone): I couldn't tell whether I was awake or in a dream, because I was still in the same 'semi-fetal position' as I was before getting sleepy. A few seconds after I noticed my eyes were open, I leave my body and start floating upward above my bed, looking at the ceiling that's right in front of me. I can't feel any part of my body, I feel just like a free-floating spirit, however the only part of my body I can see are my arms and hands (nothing else).
Wow, this feels sooo realistic!! I never 'turned around' to check if I could see my "empty body" lying on the bed, because I am so excited that my first inclination is to leave my bedroom and float/wander around my house. So I float through my door, and head downstairs. When I got halfway down the stairs, I slowed down till I stopped moving, then I got slowly 'sucked back' up the stairs, moved backwards into my room and 'landed' back into my body (like reverse motion). Damn it, that was too short!
I am now laying there in the same position like before, eyes open, same body-numbness. I try to stay still in this position since I want to try to float again, so I close my eyes, and mentally focus on drifting out again. It worked! About 30 seconds later, my eyes opened, and I floated up again. So I proceeded floating out of my room and down the stairs again. This time I notice that I can see my arms and hands in my peripheral vision (no other body parts though, and no physical sensation when I touched walls, etc.), when I started slowing down, I got the idea to move my arms/hands in a 'swimming motion' to get moving again. Most of the time I could float forward just by thinking of it, but I eventually keep slowing down, then doing the swimming motion to get moving, etc, in a repeating cycle. This time I actually get downstairs, and move through my living room, dining room, kitchen etc. All of the furniture and smaller items are in the same places as in real life, wow this feels so real!!. I now get the idea to fly through my living room window. As soon as I get through the window, but before I float past my porch, into the yard/street, I am back in my bed (this time I didn't go slowly backwards up the stairs, it was just instantaneous/abrupt).
Like before, I want to try again, so I stay still, same position, body numbness, and focus. In 30 seconds it works a 3rd time. This time it was a lot easier to float forward than the last 2, as if I have 'learned' how to do it a little more each time, more confidence too. So I float downstairs, through living room, dining room, kitchen. Still see my arms/hands on each side while floating. When I get to the end of the kitchen, I turn around towards the living room window again. When I got in the living room, this time there was a hot woman sitting on my couch. Awesome, I see the opportunity to combine this already-cool OBE into a sex-dream as well. I float right up close to her, grab her waist with my hands, and start thrusting forward and back, forward and back, etc. Usually in a normal wet-dream I can actually feel my penis making contact as if it's real, and ejaculate quickly However, in this case I couldn't feel any physical or sexual sensation (maybe because the only thing attached to my spirit is arms/hands, but not a torso, legs or a penis, lol), which is frustrating as I keep thrusting on her with no progress.
Next thing I know, without ejaculating, I'm back in bed, same semi-fetal position on my left side. This time I have a rock hard erection from lack of ejaculation. Naturally I stay still and try to float up again. 2 minutes have gone by, and the semi-numb body-buzz fades away. Damn it, I am awake and can feel my body now, it's over (maybe the erection drew too much attention to my physical body?). Still I was surprised it happened 3 times, before it stopped. I now change position in bed, and simply fall asleep, and wake up 5 hours later like normal.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There wasn't any element of fear during the 3 OBEs, even the first session. In fact, the sensation of floating around felt so realistic, and was one of the most euphoric experiences of my life!! I felt so happy and carefree when I left my body. Not to mention that before the start of each float session, the semi-numb opiate-like body buzz was pleasurable as well. It's kind of like I was not conscious but not asleep, I was somewhere between awake and dreaming, almost like an opiate-nod but more lucid and realistic. At no time during the 3 OBEs did I see my 'empty' body after floating up, and I didn't bother to 'turn around' and look because I thought this might cause my to 'merge' and end it.
So I am wondering what exactly caused this to happen?? I've done psychedelics, opiates, benzos (each seperately) in the past near bedtime, but this is the first time I had an Out of Body Experience. It's definitely worth mentioning that before I tried falling asleep (after the weed, but before the xanax and melatonin) I was on the internet (erowid) reading Salvia trip-reports. One of the TRs in the salvia-section wasn't about Salvia, but rather a 'trip report' of someone's OBE without any drugs. This included descriptions of several different types of OBEs, one of which was the type that I had later (the author called it the "Wandering" type of OBE). Although his wandering-OBE spirit didn't have hands/arms like I did.
This was the first time I read a trip report about OBEs, and I found it very interesting/entertaining, so could it be that just having it on my mind before going to bed caused it to happen to me? Or was it the combination of weed (sativa/indica hybrid), xanax, and melatonin?? Or was it the 3 substances combined with the 'power of suggestion' from reading the OBEs?? There were no other drugs in my system except those mentioned.
Have any of you had OBEs after a similar combination of substances? If your OBEs happen without drugs, is there usually a 'cause' or pattern to what you did before going to bed? I'd like to find out what did it for me if possible, so I can try to repeat it. It was definitely a memorable experience!!
