my doctors told me :xanax & clonazepam useless and baclofen useless for alcohol withd

So should i leave en and choose other doctors ? I feel they are basically idiots.

*First doctor : Clonazepam isnt used even for anxiety and he also told me that inderal needs to be taken daily not before performance -.-

*Second docotor : Baclofen is useless for anxiety and alcohol withdrawal plus he told me gabapentin is more potent than lyrica -.-

*Third doctor : Xanax is useless for anxiety just use ssri with seroquel -.-

So is it just me or are my doctors basically clueless....none of their words makes sense at all . Are they really clueless or is it just business point for them ?wanting me to stick to them for longer periods ? Or are they really clueless -.- i even asked them for pramipexole since it increases dopamine which automatically eases anxiety one of em told me 'dont look at it pharmacologically there are rules to psychiatry -.- ***

And you can also tell me if they are right at what they say

Idiots, all of them. Definitely find new doctors as every one of the points listed are incorrect. Can't say that I'm surprised, I've had many encounters with dumb doctors. It's truly sad when you realize how dim some of the people who's hands you put your life in can be. The worst is when it took me several months just to get doctors to take me seriously and run the proper tests when I had a near fatal bilateral pulmonary embolism.

They constantly ignored my severe shortness of breath, chest pain/pressure, fatigue, and a ton of other symptoms saying that it was all anxiety and that "they're the one's who get paid to do this, so they would know", when in reality I had clots in my lungs and almost fucking died...

It was pretty disgusting being misdiagnosed and treated like a scared child by know it all's who really knew nothing at all. Because I was supposed to be prescribed anticoagulants asap I could've had another fatal embolism, luckily I didn't. Never even got as much as an apology when I confronted them with results I got from the CT I've been demanding for months. Now I've got tens of thousands of dollars in debt due to all my hospital visits and the incorrect tests. Sorry, guess I'm just ranting now :p

what a fuckin shame i feel you though brother hope everything gets better for you

as for alcohol WD depending on how much you drink and how often you need to drink a shitload everyday to exp WD if anything you'll exp anxiety like a son bitch
after 24 hrs from your last drink you feel like complete shit or your hands start to shake clearly a bad sign
you should never never try to detox alone if you even think that you'll exp WD from alcohol
a real detox center is recommended all they do is give you valium and vitamins for 7 days i went personally and that's what they gave me
10mg the first 3 days 3x a day then 5mg as needed for the rest of the 4 days and plenty of vitamins im not a doc or a pro just sharing what they gave me
any benzo's with anti convulsion and anti anxiety properties should be used while detoxing from alcohol
valium or klonopin are good because they are anti seizure anti anxiety and has a long half life
xanax not so much because it doesnt last long

if you do plan on detoxing at home which i still dont recommend stock up on kpins or valium and have someone monitor you 24/7 and check your vitals every few hrs
between the first 24-72 hrs after you quit will be the worst so be prepared
stay hydrated and get plenty of rest
also you can also get a 2nd opinion i would as they clearly dont know what they are talking or have very little exp with alcohol WD and benzos

you should send those asshole docs the bills. i hate incompetence especially when i am the one paying for it.

God this makes me SO fucking furious.

Sorry but I just have to ask--Did the doctors even realize that they were incorrect once you gave them the results?!?!?!

Why are so many clueless fucks able to get jobs as psychiatrists when a lot of bluelighters know more than them?!?

Do states have any kind of boards that do quality control related to psychiatrists or run surveys to find out if they are doing a good job??

Or are doctors just free to do whatever they want once they have their Phds???

Someone needs to do something about shit like this.

The results clearly stated "bilateral pulmonary embolism", they knew what was found in the test. I can only assume doctors get a lot of hypochondriacs and after a certain point they become jaded know it all's and don't even run the proper tests to figure out what's wrong with patients because they're convinced it's "in their heads". This leads to the patient explaining how it's not in their head with excitement and from here on they label you as a either a hypochondriac or someone with some sort of mental disorder.

The thing with knowledge about medication is that doctors usually, IME at least, don't have any significant grasp of pharmacology and they seem to just "go by the book" (for lack of a better term). This leaves them susceptible for not understanding drug interactions very well on a deeper level. They also have to have knowledge on every drug they prescribe and we all know that's just not gonna happen. Then you have lobbyists from pharmaceutical companies paying doctors to prescribe certain medications while also lying to them about side-effects, their efficacy, and what they should be prescribed for (an example being the gabapentin lawsuits for false advertisement ). There's just so much fuckery and ego involved in the medical field that I take what doctors say with a grain of salt and always double check any info they provide. This is something everyone should do honestly.

The amount of times I've schooled my doctor only to have them reject any true information I provide is gross. It's not like it was one doctor denying these tests, besides the handful of doctor visits, a cardiologist, and a lung specialist I saw (all treated me like It was in my head) I was hospitalized 5 times before they decided to run a CT scan, every other time they would just do a chest x ray and ekg despite me telling them I've had a handful done and all were negative. My chart litterally said "anxiety" when I saw it on the counter. The more you come back the more they think it's in your head, to the point that they just have it written that I'm a patient with anxiety... it's disgusting and frustrating beyond belief. The amount of physical suffering I went through was horrendous, imagine going through that and having everyone tell you it's in your head.

Yeah I hear you, especially because being someone with anxiety I could also easily see that happening with me and have seen how negatively many doctors look at people with anxiety.

Yes, I have anxiety, but that doesn't mean to consider my concerns any less seriously than those without.

I agree it is smart to always get a second opinion or even aside from that to just read a lot about your situation/drug yourself in case both doctors are wrong.

I too have run into DR's who have used the anxiety cop out. It's a nice way of saying "I really don't give a shit if there is something wrong with you"

OP: Where I live they use Librium and Clonidine for alcohol WD.

Diazepam might be a decent option as well.

If you're MD actually said some of that stuff, they are severely misinformed. Are you sure you didn't misunderstand? I can see an APRN saying something like that, they're the workhorses of modern medicine and I've found many of them are utterly unprepared. They're knowledge of pharmacology, or lack thereof, is especially troubling, considering I know a great deal more than them; 75% of this knowledge coming from online forums.

A reason drugs like benzodiazepines may be contraindicated is if the prospective patient has had a drug or alcohol addiction/dependency. They really aren't meant to be used for more than a short while - weeks, but maybe that's changed. To say blatantly that they do not relieve anxiety is pretty farfetched as they belong to a class of drugs known as anxiolytics.
