Music tastes changing? Due to aging or change of drugs of choice?

`Hello bluelighters!

I was just sitting here pondering my musical and drug history and thinking of the ways I have wandered on different paths. I am an old chick, 47, and of course when I was coming of age, 70s rock was the shit we wanted to hear when we were smoking weed and drinking beer. I turned into a Grateful Dead fan and followed them for a while until the lack of regular accommodations and hygiene, not to mention the poor finances put a stop to that. Damn we had some great acid at those concerts, though, and I always enjoyed the music at the shows. Even back then, though, I noticed an attraction to minimalist (or just plain weird) artists like Phillip Glass. I have a guilty attraction to some 80s dance as well, but the whole EDM rave thing just blew past me, I guess I was at the wrong age. I lived in the country, we spent most of our times riding around in the woods drinking beer. Lately though it seems like I have wanted to listen to nothing but EDM on Sirius. I can't say I like it all, I am just trying to figure out what is what. Trance, minimal, house....I don't know what is what, and when I do like something I immediately forget who did it. I do know that one of my favorite artists is Josh WInk on the Profound Sounds show on Sirius. I like some of Carl Cox's broadcasts too...but I will be damned if I know if it was a change of drugs that brought this about or my age. I can tell you that I don't hear too many old ladies rolling down the road blasting this shit. And hearing "turn that shit off" from your co-riders.

Enough pondering, I am going to burn a pipe and listen to some Josh Wink

Peace, C.

Wait a minute, I have to exclude modern country from this discussion..I have always despised it and would probably kill myself if I was forced to endure that at this moment.

I've sort of gone into liking Minimal and House more...love me some Chicago House. I don't really listen to Trance much these days. If anything I'll listen to Hard Euro(? Euro has changed into some weird pop beast with hardstyle leanings so whatever that is) as opposed to Trance. I like progressive trance now more as well.

darktech? dark drum and bass and liquid I find better as well. Hard Techno is still awesome and I'm sure I wouldn't mind listening to the latest Tunnel releases - Hard Trance. Gabber is great too. Its all about soundcloud and di.fm don't really have time to download podcasts or anything.

I went from liking only trance to liking more Popish/progressive house sounding music, like new tiesto for example...I even like that style more than trance now. I don't think it had anything to do with drugs i was doing.

I often think about how my tastes have evolved and why, it's pretty interesting When I first properly got into music it was all hard rock and heavy metal for a few years, used to go to Metallica shows and the like. In my mid teens I got into indie music and alternative rock a lot more, stuff like Modest Mouse, My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead etc. Also listened to quite a lot of hip-hop, particularly 90's stuff from the east coast...Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, lots of that.

Then just before I turned 19, MDMA happened :D In the space of about a month my taste changed from indie/hip hop to almost 100% electronic music. Went through a trance stage, then drum & bass, into dubstep and other stuff...I've given most of the main genres a decent amount of time. My favourites are probably deep house and old school dubstep,

They say heavy drug use freezes you in time, and I have seen it do this. People doing the same things they did when they started drugs, listening to the same music etc. I've always made it a point to try to listen to different kinds of music.
