Treatment Muscle twitches and psych meds—should I be concerned?

Hi all

So I’ve been stable on lithium for a couple months but I’m starting to get muscle twitches. For example, I’m sitting in my recliner with my legs up and my left leg just jerked up mildly and no my right but otherwise I feel great.

I did call my doctors but had to leave a voicemail and they haven’t called back yet.

I did start Latuda two days ago but I’m pretty sure it’s the lithium. I am in low dose Latuda.

See your doctor ASAP, that could be akasthisia and it can be serious. Please see your doctor and see if you can change to a different one. These drugs are known to cause this problem and it can become severe if the offending drug is continued.

Yeah, you definitely want to address this issue sooner rather than later, it could be an early sign of a secondary condition related to the med, such as tardive diskinesia (sp). Not sure if that's typically an issue with lithium; I had great results combining that with fluoxetine years ago but had to stop due to thyroid issues. You may need to switch meds or add one such as Cogentin, as is typical to counteract twitches, often when prescribing certain APs. Zyprexa is one, though oddly enough I'm on that now with no need for cogentin lol.
