The South Australian Government is being urged to consider a trial of the drug MDMA, known as ecstasy, to treat war veterans.

State Democrats MP Sandra Kanck has told State Parliament's Upper House that trials of the drug have shown excellent results for treating United States and Israeli soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Ms Kanck was criticised by her own party back in 2006 for saying ecstasy could have helped people traumatised by bushfires which swept across Eyre Peninsula.

She concedes her latest suggestion will not be well-received at first.

"I imagine [what] the minister's kneejerk reaction will be ... but I hope that he will go beyond that and look at the science," she said.

"They've done it with rape victims, they've done it with war victims and everywhere they've tried it in these trials they have found it to be a superlative drug."

Interesting political climate in Australia at the moment. We could see quite a few nice changes like this starting down under..

mdma is really a phenomenal drug when used appropriately, not abused.

low dose mdma have helped me more than any other drug for social anxiety , depression , basically my overall well bieng. positively effected my life in major way.

if there is a drug that will help war veterans lead better lives, why the FUCK NOT???

I think their starting to look in the right direction good for them. MDMA is a very good drug when used the correct ways, I think they should do much more research into it and use it for these types of traumatized patients...

If John McCain is serious about treating PTSD in traumatized war veterans then he should consider giving them 125 mg MDMA by mouth under the supervision of a psychoanalyst once a week for one to three months at a time.

"the South Australian government is being urged"

...by single member of parliament

there is no movement or even awareness of PTSD treatment in the community or parliament

*Ends sarcasm*

mate if you've ever taken ecstasy you'll be aware that it has massive therapeutic value. it can help break down barriers in therapy sessions to speed up healing much more quickly than therapy alone.

Take the drug once a week for 3 months?

Um, this would have more negative aspects than positive. I assumed using MDMA as an aid would only be done once, or a few times over a few years at the most. The positive nature of this drug tends to disappear when taken regularly.

i think one dose would not be enough to cure PTSD. once a year? thats a bit ridiculous. i propose once a month :D

Why wouldn't one dose be enough? Most studies done use only one. Once a month is still too frequently, and the beneficial effects of the drug will disappear shortly.

I'm not sure I agree that therapeutically beneficial effects disappear after a number of ingestions (my own opinion obviously).

Maybe the recreationally desirable effects diminish with repeated use, but I believe these relate to the more intense features of MDMA.

For my own part, and I've seen it reported by others, even after a few years of use (once per month or slightly more), I still feel more psychologically open having taken 125mg of MDMA. It's this relatively short (approx 2hours) therapeutic window that is of interest to psychotherapists rather than the ability to jump around to music for 4 hours.

It damages the serotonin receptors in your brain causing depression.
Hardly what I'd call therapeutic.

it's said a 3 hour session on mdma is similar to three months of usual therapy. I'd say a yearlong treatment consisting of 3 or 4 sessions would be enough for most people.

It doesn't damage it. Why are you even on this board. It releases alot of your serotonin and some dopamine all at once.

I did E once to get a good feel for it and the stuff was great. I think even just after the first time the people would feel alot better.

I would say maybe once a month 2 times so they break through twice. Then after that maybe once every 2-3 months. I have seen/met a guy who did E every week. He was litterly retarded.. This stuff is great if you know how it works and what it does. And how to use it! If your not open minded you shouldn't be on this board.

Anyone whos took E once like me only once. Would know that it doesn't cause permanent damage at all. You just have to wait for your body to produce more serotonin by taking stuff like 5htp. Some people even take certain things when there comming down to make the serotonin re up take faster. Also by just waiting..
