Hi can someone help me please.I am on morphine sufate for pain.I am a cancer patient.20mg I am on. this is not doing it for me .I have been on it a year.I went back to the doctor and he prescribed naproxen wich is tearing my stomach out which is anti inflamatory.Cant take this.I dont want to hurt myselfby taking crushed kadian for pain 20 mg .Does any one know will this give me relief rite away and is it safe1 or 2 x daily

Morphine is still the gold standard for pain relief and is the drug by which all others are judged. The one huge drawback about morphine pills, IR and XR respectively, is that a lot of the drug is lost in digestion. A lot of times drs will add another non narcotic pain reliever to try to boost the pain relief. If its not working just be honest with you doctor. There is no reason why you cant try other pain relief options, maybe something with a higher oral BA. You could take more, but if you have a low tolerance you want to be careful.

That much morphine is safe for most everyone 2x daily... Even crushed.

What you need is a doctor that will take your condition more seriously, or convince your current one. Do you not think either of those are possible?

Really your best bet is to be honest with your doctor. You need to be insistent - If you are in pain, you deserve treatment. If your doctor seems unwilling to help, look into finding a new doctor.

Simply explain the situation - Say that your morphine dose is not helping enough and that the naproxen isn't helping. Do so with conviction though. Say "I really can't stand the pain", not "Well, I'm still experiencing pain"
