Middle school youths overdose on 'ecstasy'
FROM EXAMINER STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAN JOSE — Eight San Jose middle school students who apparently overdosed on the drug ecstasy have been discharged from the hospital.
The students, all between the ages of 12 and 14 and enrolled at Chaboya School in the Evergreen neighborhood of San Jose, bought the drug from a fellow student, authorities said.
The designer drug known as "liquid ecstasy" has resulted in at least a dozen deaths nationally since 1993.
Three students were taken to San Jose Medical Center at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, where they were examined and discharged, said hospital spokeswoman Leslie Kelsay.
She said the other five students had been taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose. All five also were examined and released.
San Jose police spokesman Rubens Dalaison said two students would most likely be arrested and that six would be cited and turned over to their parents.
Police were continuing to investigate the case, he said.
