Opioids MMT for Pain?

Hi,

Does Methadone Maintenance clinics consider patients for pain?

I'm addicted to opiates and have ruined the trust of my Doctors due to taking too much medication and running out.

I have a herniated disc. I was wondering if MMT coud address not only my opiate abuse but also for pain relief for my back.

no i don't believe they do (for managing pain), but they don't need to know it's for pain, if you know what i mean..
just show up with opiates in your system and tell them your addicted to them and you'd like to start MMT.
They will think it's for addiction when really you're managing your pain.
BUT it would show up on your medical record as you being a addict (i think).

Methadone should work great for the pain for the first week using it,after that probably not.
I myself used to be prescribed Dilaudid and Hydromorph Contin along with methadone,as ...I was forced to go on just methadone when I hit 70 milligrams.

My friend also has fucked up knees and get's morphine 100's with a daily dose of 50 mg's of methadone.And he's not double doctoring either,but he's the only one I know personally that gets both legally.In fact,he and I discussed this last week,He says this is why gets morphine with methadone,The more "Traditional" Painkillers work better for pain.

But still,I dont see why he should be on both,If I was in chronic pain wear every step was like being hit in the knee-caps with a bamboo pole,I would switch full time to morphine etc. for more pain relief.

Also alot of doctors that can prescribe methadone are also pain specialists.One guy I know gets four or five 50-60 milligram doses per day.The same guy is allergic to the tang orange drink mixed with methadone,so he gets pink lemonade all for himself,I've asked for it myself but was refused lol

I know of a couple people who use methadone clinics for pain. Usually the patients' doctor communicates with the methadone clinics' medical providor(s) and they decide on an appropriate dose and the logistics and all that. It is not an uncommon practice.

Keep in mind you have to dose multiple times a day when methadone is used for pain relief (I believe it's four times a day).

There is no such thing as an all encompassing "medical record" that has everything about you in it. Any doctor would not only have to find the exact doctor/clinic/hospital but then have to inquire specifically about the question at hand. I'm not sure where people get this idea that you are "flagged as an addict" and can "never receive narcotics again."

Would doctors ask what medications you're on or what medical problems you have if they could just look it up in the magical worldwide medical database?

Methadone did work for pain with me somewhat, problem is I needed multiple dosing per day because its painkilling effects wear off at around 6 hours. Because of that I dont think MMT with a single daily dose is a good idea. But methadone does help pain, I have an aunt who was miserable until her doctor started her on methadone. More and more doctors are beginning to use it for pain usually prescribed to be split into 2 or 3 doses per day I believe.

While Methadone will help with your pain, the clinic will be focused on treating your addiction before anything else. They may adjust your dose slightly to assist in treating your pain, but their main concern will be maintaining your addiction.

I think that if you are having addiction issues, you should try out MMT to see if it helps. There's a good chance it will treat your pain while simultaneously treating your addiction.

im a chronic pain patient that is on MMT, and it works great for me. i lost my insurance and mmt seemed like a better deal. you have to tell them youre a drug addict otherwise you can't get in the clinic.

Methadone works well for my chronic pain. its practically gone. i've only been going for about 3 weeks so im still adjusting to the right dose, but i think it works better for me than suboxone. when i was on subs, i got no pain relief

yo, chill.
why do you think i said (i think) at the end.. cuz i knew some douche would say something bout it.. whenever medical records are brought up THIS exact argument starts almost every time.
all my doctors are part of the same "group/hospital" type thing. my records are shared between all of them, i am flagged.
AND for people with insurance, if you need a recomendation to a different doctor, they will most likely send your records along to that doctor IF they have your permission, and if you don't give them permission it will cause the doctor to wonder "hmm i wonder why he doesn't want me seeing his medical records?".. so yeah in a sense you're right. But it ain't impossible for your records to be shared between doctors and to be "flagged" as a drug user.

The only way a doctor will ever know you're an addict is if you tell them. When they ask for your previous doctors and their phone numbers, if you give them the info, that is the only way they could find out.

If you don't want your doctor to know, don't tell them, but if you want accurate and helpful medical care, I suggest telling them. If they find out you're lying, they probably won't see you anymore.

I can't say for sure whether a(n) MMT clinic would put you on maintenance for pain issues, but it doesn't seem implausible or anything. Methadone seems to work very well in treating pain for some, while being ineffective for others. Probably depends on the type of pain too.

Considering your circumstances, this sounds like it could be a viable option for you, as in sort of killing two birds with one stone (addressing addiction + pain management).

Fifty milligrams of Methadone daily on top of several hundred milligrams of Morphine is quite a bit. Never heard of a combination like that, but hey, if it works it works!

My guy back in California who I used to get Morphine from was prescribed Morphine Sulfate and Methadone concommitantly. He had some pretty serious spinal issues among other things. And though he took less than what was indicated, he was prescribed a hefty dose of Morphine ER 100mg tabs 4x daily, plus IR 30mg tabs for breakthrough. Then on top of that 4x daily 5mg Methadone tablets, 20mg total per day. Methadone, being and NMDA antagonist, helps to downregulate(?) Opioid receptors, increasing the efficacy of the Morphine, while ideally maintaining a steady rather than ever- increasing tolerance. It has also shown to be more effective at combatting nerve pain, which was a big part of the problem for him. This was his doctors reasoning anyhow. From what I've read, it makes sense, though it still in a way seems like overkill.
