Hey all,
Just been diagnosed with ADHD, which is kind of a relief cos i sort of always knew something wasn't right as far as ability to keep myself entertained and follow assignments/hobbies/chores through to completion.
Anyway what prompted me to finally go and get myself checked out is the fact that i've been inadvertently self-medicating with weed for the past 4 and a half years despite not fully appreciating the fact that anything was wrong. I just assumed life ain't fair and some people are just born with high attention spans and the ability to do the same repetitive job/work over and over and over whereas some people can barely muster enough focus to hold down a stimulating conversation (I had shockingly bad social skills pre-weed).
Smoking weed pretty much restores my ability to focus on a single task at a time as well as boosts my and ability to instinctively react to the people and things around me instead of basically being the most boring socially inept person I know. Everything was going pretty well with weed (my academic work still suffered but i wasn't doing any work before anyway), except over time the amount of weed i'm having to smoke's got crazy and the high barely even lasts. I'm just left with awful comedowns that pretty much leave me like an even more zombiefied, socially inept & and unmotivated person than i would be stone cold sober.
So was referred to the psychiatrist and am going back in a couple of weeks to hopefully get started on a new plan of action. The psychiatrist mentioned behavioural or psychiatric therapy which i told him i think would be pretty pointless cos i managed to work out what all the mental & behavioural issues were and ways around them without ever having to see a doctor. The introspective qualities of weed have been like therapy already for me and at 23 yrs old I recognise all the signs of when i'm in an inattentive state, i know what the effects are and i know most of the manual ways of getting around them (eg. writing lists to stay orgasnised, breaking assignments down into manageable chunks.....etc). Since I had to work all these things out the hard way they're pretty much ingrained in me as ways of dealing with my own personality. All i'm after now is a method of combining all this with the ability to stay switched on/alert and interact with other peoples personalities, something weed no longer helps me with for longer than 20 mins a time.
Anyway the doctor mentioned Methylphenidate/ritalin which i've already heard of as a stimulant and was wondering if anyone else has any experience using this to treat ADHD, particularly in comparison to weed which has worked well in itself up until now. No prescribed medicine i've ever tried has ever given me an effect anything like as intense as weed, and i'm also a bit wary of developing a taste for stimulants. So i'm seriously considering if it's even worth bothering to try out this prescribed stuff at all or just find a way to make weed work?
