It seems our scene here in Melbourne is slowly heading back towards the underground. I personally think this is a great thing. The last thing that we want is for raves and dance parties to become mainstream.
Here's a couple of things that show that this is happening:
1. Earthcore have decided that they are not going to do the "mass promotion" thing anymore. ie. posters on poles. They are getting back to basics (word of mouth, etc.)
2. The Docks will soon be dead. As much as we all loved the docks in the past, they are now the stage of those large, mass promoted parties aimed at crowds of 10,000+
From what I have learnt about Sydney's scene, it also went through the stage of becoming "popular" and "mainstream", and it is now back underground. Hopefully this is the path Melbourne will follow.
And to all those who say that DJ's won't want to play at underground parties - well that's their loss. Take Chris Liberator for example. He PREFERS playing underground parties, and I'm sure that a lot of other internationals would be in the same boat. (Apart from your Paul Van Dyke's and your Oakenfolds. But who gives a shit about them anyway?) Almost every international that passes through Melbourne wants to play at Teriyaki. Why? Coz its an underground club that fucken RAWKS! And the DJs are aware of this...
I'm hoping that the big promotion companies such as Future, Agent Mad and Hardware will follow the lead of Earthcore and quit their mass-marketing of the rave scene in Melbourne. No matter how much they try and deny it, it is just a mad grab for cash...
Peace, and all that
