i am intending on taking phlebotomy classes this fall, and want/need to continue my education further in the medical field. i want to also be a certified radiographer tech and eventually be a RN with a lot of focus on dietary and psychological issues.

my question is if there is any mention of my iv drug use on my records(which there is likely none) and alcohol poisoning(which i blame on BAD hypoglycemia) am i not eligible or fooling my self that i may have a chance here? i have several marijuana possesion charges and a misdemeanor pocs. all of which are 10+ years old. i have also been in drug rehab several times in and out patient.

i am going to get my medical records soon to know just what is on there.

thank you much for your responses :)

i am in the states.

surgery huh..? wow! kudos to you.

that is fairly reashuring. what say you towards my comments about prior possible iv use in my medical history? i foolishly mentioned it once during an admistration, and have a case of phlebitis in my left arm on my record(as far as i know).

again iam going to retrieve my med records for all the duuurty details.

:D

i have had plenty of blood work done since my last shot 7-8 years ago, as recently as 2 weeks ago even. and im as healthy as a hoarse accept for my hypoglycemia.

sure what you say can mean squat, if i had gotten a few responses saying that past iv users have no chance in the medical field then i would of taken that very seriously, cried in my pillow, and then called anonymously as you mentioned :) if my records did mention it.

i was told i can never donate blood since i admitted to my iv usage many years ago(drr) so i feel it can be considered one in the same(giving, or taking blood) or maybe id be less of a liability if i did have a communicable blood disease(j/k)

if you're interested in phelobotomy or becoming an RN you should be alright.

medical records don't really come up with regards to hiring except maybe to check out the existance of communicable diseases like TB - which they have titers and the like for.

you should be more concerned with your legal records. if there is stuff on there check your local laws, even if it is a problem, just play it off as it was a learning experience...

The proof will be in your app - your grades, your professionalism, etc. If you had a turnaround, then people will recognize it.

The best advice is to call your state liscensing board and just ask them...no need to give your name. Then when you are applying for your liscense you should just be up front with them..no sense in hiding it. For god's sake, there are doctors CURRENTLY using IV drugs who they have to worry about. You just have to prove to them you won't ever shoot up again.

I'm a US pre-med so if you have other questions feel free to PM

awsome, thanks for your responses.

you all seem confident that it shouldnt be a major problem, or an immediate disqualification at least. i feel much more comfortable about any issues that could come up then before.

nah i aint going back their again, im glad i got it out while i was younger, in fact it makes some sense. i think they will believe me, and be surprised at the fact.

again thanks for your responses and ill be in touch, as im sure i will have other questions... ; )
