Hey,

My girlfriend currently takes lithium for BPD. Is it safe for her to take mdma? She has taken mdma before but not since starting lithium.

Thanks :)

It's not advisable. Lithium doesn't mix well with MDMA. A quick search on the forum's search engine or even google can answer this question.

Here's one experience.

Here's another thread on the topic.

I agree. Apart from causing a bad experience, lithium is also serotonergic, and I don't know if this could lead to serotonin toxicity but it's possible. Someone with knowledge of the pharmacology of lithium could perhaps shed some light on this. It's also not advised to take MDMA when you have mental issues, amphetamines can cause a manic state in people with BPD, as well as increasing other symptoms. Also not much is known about this combo so there's no telling what other interactions between MDMA and lithium we do not yet know of

Have you tested your MDMA with a testkit? I'll add the (untested) prefix, if you did test your drugs let me know. Also if you, against advice, decide to go through with this, start very very low. Better to not feel anything and to increase the dose in the next roll than to take too much and causing a bad experience. But again, I wouldn't risk it, there are too many factors that could cause a negative reaction I think

Thanks for the responses,

Firstly, yes I always testkit my stuff :) this MDMA is some of the most pure I've ever had, got a test kit from Bunk Police and this stuff fizzles black. Having taken MDMA, MDA, methylone, MDAI, mephedrone, and countless other RC empathogens and stims, I can say with absolute certainty that this stuff is indeed the real deal. :)

I too am mostly curious about the pharmacology of Lithium and its interactions, mostly concerning the physical safety profile. The psychological side of things is a whole nother story. I'm aware of the general rule of thumb "don't trip on psych meds" but that rule is simply too exclusive and broad. I can't imagine a small dose of MDMA producing profoundly negative lasting effects, especially since she has taken MDMA before and not only loved it, but benefited from it immensely on a psychological level. Also, she takes Focalin regularly - not technically an amphetamine but close enough, and I'm not sure to what degree it affects her manic states, but she definitely is more functional while on it than off of it. It seems to be safe, from a physical standpoint at the very least. What I'm most concerned about is the serotonergic interaction and whether or not that would be physically harmful.

If I do go through with this, which likely won't be until she has time to stabilize on the meds at the very least, I intend to start very low - 75-100mg max. Thank you both for your input :)

i'd strongly advise against taking mdma with lithium. there is some evidence that combining lithium with serotonergic drugs (for instace ssris or tramadol) can cause serotonin syndrome.

also lithium clearance is dependant on renal function. mdma can unbalance that at bit by messing with oxytocin/vasopressin levels and making people sweat a lot (which is also why dehydration is something to avoid and why drinking excessive amounts of water is even more toxic why on mdma). i don't know if this would lead to lower or heightened lithium concentrations, but with lithium's small therapeutic margin, i woulnd't take the risk.
