[disclaimer] I did not grow any of this, my friend who lives in a region where it is legal to grow personal amounts of marijuana gave me the pictures and asked if i would do this for him. So fuck off DEA

Alright first grow ever, decided to do it indoors with good nugget bag seeds that were fuck knows how old. Started on july 20th of 08, with about 14 seeds, 9 of which sprouted after successful germination. Moved into closet with 5 fluorescent bulbs hung from the bar in the closet by shop lamps. Very ghetto set up, but cheap and workable at the same time, just not very appealing.

July 25th:

A few days later a couple more seeds had germinated so i figured what the fuck, lets throw em in:

As you can see some are starting to wilt, my guessing was from the extremely low light setup that i had, but i am extremely lazy and the way i had the cords tangled up...it was going to be a fucking bitch! So i decided to do not shit about it until later. Which proved to be not too horrible after a couple more days:

Here is where one of my [buddy's] largest problem started:

Unfortunately i lost track of time around here...and so the remainder of our time line here is all guessing from here out. Today is january twenty second and my buddy who is the official grower of them just called me and said that they are starting week two of the curing. So the life span is about exactly 6 months.

more days later yellowing starts to occur on some of the leaves, my friend is worried, but not so much:

yellowing gets slightly worserrr:

Other than the yellowing of the leaves, the rest are doing great. Sure, two or three might have died during the first couple of weeks but that is to be expected, plus! my friend had the back ups, so we were back to the full nine.

On the other hand, the above mentioned problem in the mold picture took a horrible turn, since my friend is such an eager beaver, he over watered the plants, and then over watered them some more. Mold began taking over the top soil of 2 plants and then spread...fast. The next day there were mushrooms growing right at the base of some of the plants. Needless to say certain people were not happy and a dry spell came upon the plants. Along with a bunch of soil scraping.

About two weeks later the mold problem is gone, but gnats are everywhere. Everywhere. They in fact lasted until the move, months down the line, and it seems never really affected the plants. At this point they take off:

except for this one it seems...

weeks go by, finally get a temperature gauge...seems it was about right all along! Pretty sure this is about when the topping and pruning was goin down. Apparently my bud didnt know so he started a bit late...oh well no real harm done i suppose:
weed017.jpg

oh yeah, and some more lights were bought a while back that i forgot to mention. word, more pictures:

shits startin to actually go down now, the hopefully soon to be ladies are getting a nice size. lights were kept as low as possible because my friend wanted short stout plants.

Curious to see what the outcome of females was going to be, dude early sexed them with the twelve twelve for a few days and found out that the most fattest best looking plants, turned out in fact to be male. Of the seven left at this point, 3 were females. And one of them was about 4 inches tall and looking retarded as shit. Im not sure where all the pictures of her went...but here is the last of the sexy males:

After a few more days of this, the females finally show, and clones are made...with no plan of what to do with them later.

Females and Clones, going back into the twenty four hour light:

The clones didnt start off looking great...:

spilled some of the hormone solution on this poor lady:

but surprisingly they all made it, so i threw two more in the same pot as one of the others!! STUPID! both of those two died fast:
weed047.jpg

but the rest killed it and were later given away to other buddies and are currently about 6 feet tall and four months old:

At this point a net made of six pack rings from a shit load of pbr tall boys was put up to create the sea of green...which kinda worked but then again not really:

nice buds starting to form:

Moved out of the place my friend was staying at, into another! Plants transported into much better closet with space for a decent set up:

sorry there was no question. i just wanted to get that out there for my buddy and see maybe what you guys would have recommended doing differently. or just comments on how it turned out.

This is really awesome! Looks hella crystally, I would definitely smoke that. Send some my way! ha!

I know someone who wants to grow out in the woods, because it is almost the season now, to start growin'. I might be able to actually tag along.

haha, word, its lookin pretty good, but just a bit airy. and you really shouldnt say that on the INTERNETT!?

Nah -- I'm pretty fine with it. I'm sure I won't actually end up growing anything. Depends on whether I will have money by then, and by the looks of it I probably won't. But I can still hope.

Oh god, my mouth is watering. You must be doing something right if you didn't have any die yet, but remember how good something is grown definetly effects how good the bud turns out. Keep it up!

looks like a great effort for a first grow. I'd say your friend probably learned a lot from this round. I'll make a couple of suggetions. first, fill your containers higher with soil so there is not such a high wall around the plants. this will help with air circulation and help prevent damping off. damping off is where the base of the stem, where it comes out of the soil, turns brown and shrinks and kills the seedling. secound, and this is probably the most important thing, switch to some HID lights. Use at least a 400 watt MH for vegetating and go to a 1000 watt for bloom. this is going to cause some heat problems. to control heat, use ducted, glass covered hoods with an in-line exaust fan to suck the heat away from the garden. another plus to this is that it also sucks the smell away to an extent. so be carefule where you exhaust it to. this may sound expensive and I guess it is, but it will double or even triple your yield. remember, watts = weight. this is a fun hobby and your friend is in for some good times and some bad times. My friend has had over 20 years of growing experience both indoors and out and he has had everything that can go wrong to go wrong. =D grow on my man. %)

right on dude thanks for the advice. only thing is he cant afford the good lights right now, so maybe in the future buddy!! I think he needed some bigger pots too.

It takes time to get going for sure. those lights will pay for themselves in one round. I guarantee it. Don't go too big on your pots because it will be harder to control the water. My friend uses two sets of pots the smaller ones to start and then transplant to finish.

great pics! your tenacity paid off in the end :D what was the soil mix? it looks kinda shitty and i'd say that probably led to the nutrient burn and deficiencies.

nice %) although, "watts = weight" is not the whole truth! lumens are really what grow the plants, the only benefit of HID is that they can penetrate more of the canopy and send light to the lower leaves. the same lumen penetration can be had for lot less expense and also without the big issue of heat by using the full potential of fluorescents...

Gasinmycar: the reflector hoods you used are great, but they are restrictive since it prevents two bulbs from being placed closer than 5-6" apart. use more bulbs, and try using them in sockets without hoods so that you can turn them sideways to radiate the most lumens down on your plants. you can make your own hoods for the sideways bulbs by cutting up pop/beer cans and that will effectively radiate more lumens down.

another trick to increase growth with fluoros is to set up a screen of green and train as many nodes as possible right to the top in a uniform layer. that will nullify the weak penetration ability of the fluoros by bringing the plants closer to the light and exposing them to full power. or if you're too lazy to do that, you can also just set some bulbs up so they're facing the side of the plant.

hmm i wanted to say something else about fluoros, but i forgot. nevertheless, don't give up on them yet because an effective fluoro setup will ensure you get the most bang for your buck, and you may be surprised at how much weight you can squeeze from them :) i would focus more on the soil mix. for future grows, you def wanna add a liberal helping of perlite to each pot (20-25% ) to aid in water drainage. without the proper drainage, the roots won't have access to the air that they need and that would explain why a lot of them simply died out. well, putting more than one plant in a pot would also explain it. never do that, the roots are competitive and will fight to gain more footing even if it means getting tangled up in and choking another nearby plant to death :(

one last thing... a quality clone is a fine thing indeed, but they don't need to be rushed! what you can do is place the fresh cut clones in a ziploc bag with a tablespoon of fresh water and put them in the vegetable crisper of your fridge. they'll remain in stasis and keep good for weeks, just remember to occasionally open the bag up to exchange the air in it. the best part about clones is that you know they'll come out great, so always try to take as many as you can and the results will really show when you use them in a fresh grow. i look forward to pics :)

ps. great thread, welcome to BL, annndddd ah yes there are a few grow threads here in the CD archives that might give you some ideas as well. i'm working on the directory right now so if you can't find em yet just keep an eye out and they should be easier to get to in a few days

thujone makes a very good point that lumens are what we're interested in and how to get the most of them to the right places. watts = lumens = weight :) and the heat handling thing must be given its rightful consideratoin when using an HID system. failure to do so will result in disaster. My friend had to make some modifications to the ceiling of his closet.

ventzr4.jpg

as you can see, it is a major hole in the sheetrock and it goes into the attic where he has a 440 CFM inline exaust fan. That fan can be heard outside the house throught the attic soffet vents.

But he only grows ten plants at a time and he only uses two light fixtures to do it.

his yield is great, I think, shit man, he comes up with close to a pound, say 14 - 15 ounces. thats not bad from 12 square feet of floor space. a little closet grow is a great hobby. One other thing. Its cool to get this thing going and stuff but, try to keep it to yourself. don't tell anybody that doesn't need to know. be careful of how you dispose of your garden refuse. empty soil bags, nute containers, etc.

bend 90 degree early in life for SCROG prep,

sorry to hear if/wen partner robs & later snitches on you.

thats a really good idea with the beer can reflectors man, thanks, and oh yeah...i got way lazy and just bought miracle grow...i know waaay bad choice.
