saw this last night. i've enjoyed everything sofia coppola has done so far. this reminded me in many ways of the virgin suicides. a lot of the imagery was somewhat dreamy. it was a visually beautiful movie with great, mostly understated performances.

the modern music was, of course, anachronistic and that seems to annoy a lot of people but i think it blended nicely.

i also enjoyed seeing a well-known story through a different set of eyes.

I heard the audience at Cannes booed this film. BOOED! I'm guessing this had something to do with the protrayl of Marie Antoinette (Cannes being in France) and not necessarily it just being a "bad" film.

Regardless, I want to see it.

i too have loved everything that sofia coppola had done thus far and that's why i'm really looking forward to seeing this. unfortunately it doesn't come out in australia until december though..

BUMPETY BUMP!!!

Well, I first saw this ages ago but I was literally just thinking about it and thought I'd check the threads etc.

I too loved Coppola's previous films, but this...not so much. All the things I was expecting to let it down i.e the soundtrack, the costume design etc ended up working really well IMO. As ever the cinematography was amazing. Even the cast was great. I mean Asia Argento FFS!. But my God was I bored. I've even tried watching it a few times just to see if I was wrong and I honestly don't think I was.

took me a while to get to this one. i was not thrilled when it was announced. because the screenplay is based off of a novel she did not write. then once it was released, i heard one horrible thing after another. so what a pleasant surprise!

the first third is pretty boring. lacks pulse. it's just beautiful wardrobe, setting, and framing (which are maintained throughout the movie). i think the excess of sofia's long, soft shots dulls the history-with-youth clash that she's going for. the movie doesn't really start until the "I Want Candy" montage. from that point on i was entertained. she lets the flow get a little choppy, but is sure to balance it out with some of her signature style. kristen dunst is great; marie antoinette is the youthful, girly character sofia surely envisioned. oh, and she makes for a very hot little piece of royalty.

that is part of what makes sofia so awesome -- her obsession with girly. and that focus is what makes this film so much like The Virgin Suicides. all four movies share themes, but Marie Antoinette is to The Virgin Suicides as Somewhere is to Lost in Translation. though the predecessors are better, both Marie Antoinette and Somewhere have me excited about what could be next.

I absolutely loved it. Everything.

I kind of didn't care much about the story or the performances of anyone in being honest to historical fact or anything. It was just delightful to look at and listen to. I mean, I bought the double disc soundtrack I was so in love with it. Maybe it would have been even better as a short film. I'm not sure if Sofia Coppola can continue to do this, but as long as she's doing it, I enjoy these girl movies she makes. I do appreciate that Marie Antoinette is a different movie from all her other films, and I think I like it more than Lost in Translation to be totally honest.

aphex twin did a lot of the soundtrack which was pretty neat. cant actually remember if the film was any good, watched it years ago

I loved this movie.
It's on my top ten list
