Malt liquor beer drinkers are more likely to be homeless, unemployed, receive public assistance and tend to drink more alcohol, according to a U.S. study.

"Measuring MLB (malt liquor beer) consumption is difficult because MLBs differ from other beer beverages in two important aspects: container size and alcohol content by volume," said Ricky Bluthenthal of Charles R.Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.

"We found that the combination of these differences resulted in the average malt liquor drinker in our study consuming 80 percent more alcohol per drink than the average regular beer drinker."

In addition, MLBs can be sold in containers as large as 40-ounce bottles, known as "40s," commonly sold chilled and wrapped in brown paper bags for immediate consumption, according to Rhonda Jones-Webb of the University of Minnesota.

Based on previous research, we know that MLBs because of price per volume and availability are likely to be more attractive to lower-income drinkers, according to Bluthenthal. The findings are published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

of course poor people are going to drink more malt liquor when you can buy a 40 of "good" malt liquor for less than 2 bucks.

Yeah? No shit... why do you think they are drinking it? Not for the taste.. lolol..

The rich boozers drink expensive booze, and the poor boozers drink cheap shit. Boozers are boozers, ethanol is ethanol.

It has been my experience that people who are going to abuse alcohol will do so regardless of socio-economic, racial, or other background. The idea that companies are "creating" or encouraging alcoholism is IMO is stupid. If a person is going to be an addict they are going to be an addict.

Malt liquor is for bums and freshmen. Pabst is what the HIGH class drinkers drink. >:)

well, the reason is obvious, its not cuz drinking mlb makes you more likely to become an alchoholic, its just that an alchoholic is more likely to drink this stuff cuz its cheap and gets you more fucked up than regular beer.
OE!

"Everclear drinkers more likely to drink a lot"

In australia, the cheapest beverage (thats even vaguely safe for human consumption) is our Fine Wine In A Box :D
Nicknamed "Goon" (after the oldschool 1 gallon flagoon wines). It's $10 for 4 (or 5, if you look hard!) litres, which works out to less than orange juice.
Contains ~10% or so of alcohol, tastes quite foul, but is an absolute staple for highschoolers, university students and alcoholics!

I'm sure a survey of Goon drinkers would find that they, too, partake in "binge" drinking and consume more alcohol per sitting than people who drink... uhh... other stuff

Ahh the good ol Beast vs High Life debate, haven't heard it in ages... still drink both

Sort of... 2$ for 1.18 liters of malt liquor. The ethanol content is around 5.9% up to 8%. Roughly 2+ times the amount in a regular beer. So it is probably more equivalent to 2.36 liters of regular beer. And the world wonders why we are so fat. hehe..

I'm not into the 40 culture but I do like myself some keystone light, $15 for a 30 rack and you can't go wrong.
