I'll try and keep the background information as short as possible, sorry if it gets boring.
I've been on strong opioid pain killers for 2 years.
Well, I was on (alternately) Codeine Phosphate 480mg/day (I doubled my dose) or Tramadol (400mg/day...didn't wanna fuck with the seizure risk) for 17 months (so weak opiates then) then due to two collapsed disks in my spine. I am now a recovering alcoholic but was drinking up to 6 bottles of wine (up 54 units of alcohol) a day during that time.
7 months ago I was rushed into hospital with severe acute alcoholic pancreatitis, complicated by severe alcohol withdrawal (I was vomiting so much and so often that I physically couldn't get any alcohol in me). I was in ICU 2 months and very nearly died.
Anyway, I was immediately put on IV morphine for the pain. I had no problems whatsoever with bad dreams during this time (although I did have hallucinations, I never felt threated by them or afraid).
When I left the hospital I was prescribed MSContin (modified release morphine sulphate) plus oramorph (a 10mg/5ml morphine sulphate syrup) for breakthrough pain. For the first I'd say somewhere between 8-10 nights on these I suffered extremely disturbing nightmares, sometimes turning into night terrors, too. These dreams were so horrendous I was amazed my brain was capable of coming up with them (and I'm both a writer and a naturally very creative person with a fondness for horror and extreme cinema). After this relatively short period (more than a week, less than two) the dreams abruptly stopped and all was good.
About 6 weeks ago, I was switched from morphine to OxyContin (with oxycodone "roxi's" for breakthrough pain). This time the dreams were not an issue.
3 days ago I discovered fentanyl. I've been using both a nasal spray (instant) and the 72 hour transdermal patches. And again I have started having the nightmares/night terrors to be the point where I am terrified to go to sleep.
Will these dreams go away like they did with the morphine? Has anyone else experienced this on fentanyl? Or when starting an opiate?
Fentanyl is amazing for my pain and - I'm pretty sure everyone on here knows by now I'm addicted to opiates and abuse my medication lol - is probably one of the most warming, calming and euphoric opiates I have tried. So I REALLY want to avoid discontinuation if possible.
Can anybody offer advice or share similar experiences?
It would be much appreciated
